Paul’s Story

Site created on April 20, 2020

Welcome to Paul's  CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated all in one place.

As most of you know, Paul was in a car accident in the early morning hours of Thursday, April 16th in Holcombe. He was airlifted to Mayo in Eau Claire. He was put in an induced coma and intubated (breathing tube).

Paul presented with major bodily injury and face trauma, lots of cuts and bruises from head to toe. He has swelling in his brain and brain bleeding. He has several bone fractures, including severe facial fractures, multiple rib fractures, the manubrium,  and vertebrae in his spine. His heart is also under stress from bruising, pressure from the broken manubrium, and damage to his right ventricle.

As far as consciousness and brain function goes, according to the nurses in the Critical Care Unit, it's hard to tell where Paul is at since he can't talk. On Sunday morning, April 19th, they lightened his sedation to see how he would handle it, and he was responding to pain (which is a good sign!). It was concluded that he is not ready to come off sedation yet, but that time may be coming soon.

Our hometown has an amazing sense of community and we know everyone has so much love and support to give.  This is an extremely hard time for everyone, especially with the hospital being on the defense because of COVID-19. There is absolutely no visitors allowed in to see Paul, which has been particularly tough on his siblings. We will be updating this page as often as we can.  We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement, and can't wait until we can share everything with Paul.

EDIT 4/21: For those who wish to support Paul's recovery, there is a benefit fund set up through Northwestern Bank named "Paul Nedland Benefit Fund". We ask that if a contribution is made that you note your name in the memo of the deposit. Thank you.
