Newest Update

Journal entry by Leigh Longino

Thank you all for the notes and checking in during the last couple of weeks.  Dad has been settled at Harbor's Edge and back to participating actively each day in physical therapy.  He is able to walk to and from the gym and is working on steps.  He has seen good improvement in the use of his right arm, hand and leg.  His speech is much improved.  He speaks with clarity.  This gives his spirits a good boost!    Oddly enough, he is experiencing a decline in his hearing since the surgery.  As you know, with Butler ears, it hasn't been great for the last 30 years, so maybe he will finally give in to hearing aids.
We did receive the pathology report and the tumor is confirmed Melanoma.  We met with the oncologist today and she provided a lot of information and spelled out a good path forward.  A PET scan will provide more information and course of treatment.  Post brain tumor surgery, radiation is a typical next step.  They do this for "clean up" of any lingering cells in the area of the tumor.  It is non invasive, outpatient procedure with little side effects.  Dad goes on 10/15 for this appointment.
We are all praying and hopeful for an isolated melanoma in the tumor that was removed, and we are also preparing for other diagnosis as PET test results provide us with that information.
We were encouraged by the advances in immunotherapy treatments.  The oncologist specifically said they have been a game changer in treatment of melanoma.  This is the same cancer, melanoma brain tumor,  that Jimmy Carter successfully recovered from a few years ago.
Please continue to pray hard for dad's recovery, and for our hope for a good quality of life for a long time.   I will keep you posted in the weeks to come.
Blessings to you all.
