Paula’s Story

Site created on December 28, 2019

Dear Friends,
Last June, Paula was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). AML is considered an aggressive and hard to treat form of cancer, and we have been busy through the summer and fall with leading edge treatments through UCHealth Anschutz in Denver. Paula had been enjoying an encouraging level of remission through November, but in early December her cancer began to return at a rapid rate. We were able to enjoy a beautiful Christmas with family here in Buena Vista (where we retired to in 2016). The options for treatment at this time are limited and each comes with significant risks and low probabilities for success. We have begun utilizing hospice services, and our primary focus now is to spend this time enjoying quiet days at home, while holding one another in the warmth of our love, and the assurance of God's love and grace for us.
Paula and I have had since June to face these hard realities, and to the degree one can, Paula is at peace with things, and I am able to love her in all the ways that she needs. Her kids, Ryan and Jennii, and their spouses Janet and Ray,  are also living here in BV, as well as my son Jonathan is here visiting from DC,  so she has all that help and love to give her comfort. As we have reflected on our lives these last months, one thing we are so aware of is our thankfulness for the people that have been so important in our lives. Our family of course, but so much sweetness and purpose has been given to us through our friendships. With each one of you, our relationship has been special and unique, loved and cherished. Today, our thoughts of you bring a smile to our hearts.
We will continue to post updates on the Caring Bridge site. Please feel free to communicate here if you like, or also we will welcome any emails to  charliepaulaasher@gmail.com . Also, please share the link to this site with any others you feel might like to have the information.
With thanks and love,
Charlie and Paula
