Journal entry by Beverly Rudd —
My son Patrick, has been in VCU since January 2nd 2020. His alcoholism has finally caught up with him. He said he ‘played the odds’ & lost. He has cirrhosis of the liver & needs a transplant to survive. VCU has turned him down. He has had 2 CT scans as he was thought to be having a stroke as they could not wake him. He was not, but after the 2nd scan they were still unable to wake him & thought he was having seizures. He was then shuffled off to Critical Care ICU, put on a ventilator-because they said if he was having seizures he could stop breathing. They attached probes all over his head & wrapped his head in gauze to keep them in place, for a 24 hour EEG..he had no more seizures during that time. He had a feeding tube for meds & nourishment. He finally woke up after about a day-gradually got better -was moved to another ICU-& eventually to a regular room on another floor. ‘Where’s Waldo?’ He is doing much better for now. His kidneys have greatly improved & he can eat anything on the low sodium menu but fluids are limited to 1800ml a day. He may be discharged in a day or two-hopefully w/home health support. Still looking for a liver transplant & insurance to pay for it. Your prayers are greatly appreciated!
