Journal entry by Patricia Stone —
Our ALZ journey officially began in 2009, a journey now hindsight shows me truly began several years before. However, there’s no way I could have known because Alzheimer’s wasn’t even a part of my vocabulary. Clueless, until reality hit home with a diagnosis in 2009, I oftentimes wonder why didn’t I see the signs? Had I known earlier, would I have done anything differently, I just don’t know. But, then in reality how could I have known or done anything differently in 2003, when I then I don’t remember ever hearing the word, “Alzheimer’s.” I truly believe that nothing happens before it’s time. Not only have I learned to speak Alzheimer’s/Dementia, I’m learning communicating caregiving to other caregivers each moment by sharing our story whenever possible. While there isn’t a cure, it’s anybody’s disease, it’s an individual journey, in sharing my trials, failures, successes, hopefully I’m helping another receive care with dignity, kindness, compassion, respect, patience and love. I’m sharing hands on caregiving, by day and by night. I’m encouraging caregivers everywhere to be a voice for the voiceless, with no tolerance for any form of neglect or abuse....the journey continues.....
