This year has been a difficult for all of us. The Pandemic hit and mom was feeling okay but found it lonely at times like many others. Overall she felt healthy and tried to stay connected to others. But in June she started not feeling well and came down with pneumonia. She visited the doctor and received medicine. She thought she was on the mend but continued to not feel well. Puzzled by the loss of energy and shortness of breath, mom continued to search for answers.
In late July she was feeling worse and the doctor ran more bloodwork. They discovered her hemoglobin was very low so they admitted her into the hospital for a blood transfusion and additional testing. Through lots of testing and waiting the doctors eventually diagnosed mom with Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). MDS are a rare group of bone marrow failure disorders, where the body no longer makes enough healthy, normal blood cells in the bone marrow. The disease is also known as a form of blood cancer.
As you can imagine mom was shocked and overwhelmed as were the rest of us. She has been in and out of the hospital searching for answers but that was not the diagnosis any of us ever expected. The good news is MDS is very treatable but just not curable. Mom is a trooper and taking this on as another new challenge in her life.
She began chemotherapy treatment in the hospital on August 21 that will last for five days and hopes to return home next week. We started this site to help keep all of her loved ones informed and give others an opportunity to reach out with messages. We will continue to update the site as we learn more in the coming days and weeks.
