Owen’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Three weeks ago Owen was bored and curious, he found a lighter and decided he wanted to see what would happen if he added rubbing alcohol to q tip he lit on fire.  The bottle of alcohol caught fire and exploded onto Owen's body.  Thankfully he was in the bathroom at the time and jumped into the shower to put himself out.  He ended up only burning 15% of his body.  He was taken to Strong Hospital almost immediately and that is where we have been since Sept 29th.  He has one skin graft done with pig skin to see if his body would take.  We had enough success with that, and his doctor is ready to proceed next week with another graft.  This will use a synthetic material that will help reduce scarring.  He will have a wound vac on to keep the graft in place for 3 weeks.  This will involve weekly trips to have the vac changed out.   After that they will proceed with a third graft which will involve his own skin.  Hopefully with the wound vacs on, he will be allowed to come home.  He has such a hard time with pain and the discomfort.  We keep our fingers crossed and say our prayers that he we heal quickly.  He's got physical and occupational therapy working with him to make sure he keeps everything moving the way it should.  Keep him in your prayers.  He's along way from being the quirky little man he was.  We see him from time to time, just hope he comes back!

Journal entry by Mary Wingler

Rough night with the wound vac leaking and shutting itself down.  Owen himself was doing so good til the machine shut down.  Now we aren't sure when they will discharge him.  We haven't had any issues since 330ish this morning, so we just have to wait and see.  Owen is moving his arm into positions he hasn't been able to in awhile now. I'm very excited about his progress!
