Adriaan’s Story

Site created on February 21, 2021

Our little dragon has rhabdomyosarcosis.  His name is Adriaan Joseph Van Boord.  He will be 4 years old on March 15th.  He has a little brother named Arie.  They are the center of our lives.  Adriaan is a brave dragon, a fierce dragon, a smart dragon, and sometimes a difficult dragon.  He loves words and meanings; he loves pizza and movie nights; he loves Puppers, his little stuffy, and he loves his little brother.  We thought the most important decision we would have to make for him this year was which preschool would be best for him, knowing that he loves the outdoors and planets and playing in the dirt.  Turns out our most important decision would be which pediatric oncology program would be best for him, which hospital had the best results, which pediatric program would be best.   Because our little dragon has cancer.

I feel as though I can finally breathe a little bit.  The further we get out from treatment the more I settle into the idea that Adriaan may have lucked out.
Today he had follow-up scans and labs.  There were no changes to his residual tumor, his bloodwork looked normal and his brain and chest scans were clear.  Hallelujah!
We continue to be blessed with a fairly normal life.  Adriaan recently turned five and is enjoying all that life has to offer.  He enjoys preschool, lil ninjas class, riding bikes, playing too rough with his brother and time on the farm.  He made massive progress with his trauma therapy and continues to do well in his Occupational Therapy sessions.  As you can see in the photos, his hair has come back with a vengeance and he refuses to let us cut it.
Thank you for your continued prayers, we appreciate your continued support more than you know.
