Olivia’s Story

Site created on September 27, 2020

Olivia is the absolute light in our lives.  To know her is to love her.  Her middle name is “grace” and she radiates it!  As a musical aficionado and a talented singer, she has combined those loves with her servant’s heart and chosen to pursue a career in music therapy to help others.  She is a freshman (now a Junior!) at Trinity Christian College where she received many scholarships and awards.  She is a selfless friend who is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside and an integral part of many people’s lives.

After experiencing an issue with her left eye, Olivia met with an ophthalmologist who recommended that she undergo additional tests to diagnose the cause.  On Thursday, September 24, 2020, just two days after her 19th birthday, we received the devastating news that Olivia was diagnosed with Chordoma, a rare type of bone cancer, which is situated right next to her brain stem.  Although we see her as being one in a billion, she is officially “one in a million” as related to this diagnosis.

This page is to keep you updated on the next steps and a place for you to share prayers and words of encouragement. We are so blessed because we are surrounded by such a great support system of family and friends. We know that God is with us and that the Lord will carry Olivia through this. Your thoughts, best wishes, and prayers are valued and cherished.  “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” Romans 12:12

Newest Update

Journal entry by Olivia DeJong

A long-awaited update!

First and foremost, I had my bi-annual MRI last week and I'm happy to announce that I am still in partial remission! My family, friends, and I are joyful to receive this news.

I'm not sure if this was shared last year, but last August I had a full-body scan to be sure the cancer hadn't spread. While there were no real signs of metastases, there were a few minor issues that were found, the most concerning being a small ground-glass nodule on one of my lungs. Because of this finding, I also had a chest CT last week to check on the nodule. Amazingly, the CT found no signs of the nodule- it disappeared!

In other news, I finished another semester and my third year at Trinity and I am doing very well in my academics. I've been able to maintain my near-perfect GPA, and I will graduate a semester early in December. Looking ahead, I will begin looking for my "big-girl job" in the fall and will hopefully begin working in January, and will hopefully begin graduate school for mental health counseling in the following summer or fall. More recently, I just finished a summer class and am keeping very busy teaching swim lessons and working in admissions at the Elmhurst pools.

As always, I am immensely grateful for the loving and supportive community I've found through my friends, family, church, and school- thank you for your prayers! Here's to another fun six months :)
