Dear Pat, Amelia & family
We’re so very sorry to hear that Oliver has passed away. We only met Oliver for a couple of days at our family gathering, but we gained a lasting impression of a seriously good person, with an aura of calmly considered kindness, ability, and compassion.
We too feel your loss, and we send our sincere thoughts and sympathy to you all.
It’s always so very hard to lose a loved one. But our time here comes to an end for all of us, and perhaps the most important issue is how we’ve lived while we’re here, and what legacy we leave behind.
For Oliver the answer is easy, and good. The online outpouring of kind and loving comments about Oliver demonstrates how well and widely he was thought of, and we’re sure you can recognize the marks of his personality and good character within these.
None of us are perfect, but Oliver is clearly remembered and respected as a good son, brother, husband, father, uncle, friend and colleague. Many people have shared good memories of him that will long stay with them. The world is better for Oliver’s input, and he has been an example who will continue to influence the future through you and many others. It is a good legacy.
We are grateful to have known him, and we send our love and condolences to you.
Richard & Carole

Pat, Jean-Pierre, Amelia, Heidi, Chris, Peter, and Cady, my deepest condolences. I had hoped you would have a little longer with Oliver and he with you. I remember Oliver with a large smile and thoughtful eyes, that could twinkle easily. He made quite an impression in 5th grade when we met and he could keep a soccer ball in the air for what seemed like forever.

Thank you to whoever wrote this post and included Oliver reading the Mustard Seed. That was lovely. As life would have it, I knew several people for whom the story could offer solace.

Amelia, Peter and Cady, Oliver left us with grace and dignity. My heart is broken. I shared the news with the Cornell Library staff and I received many responses honoring Oliver with memories of how kind and thoughtful he was. How he had "so much energy and joy for life" how much they enjoyed working with him. He was truly a good person and friend.

Dear Amelia, Peter, and Cady, I am so sorry to hear of Oliver's passing. My heart goes out to you, and to the whole family on both sides. Oliver was a remarkable person to begin with, and I have never seen anyone face illness and death with so much courage, determined optimism, and intelligence. It was an honor to know him, and the way he lived his life will be an ongoing inspiration to me. May you find comfort in your memories of the good years with him.
