Norma’s Story

Welcome to Norma Harvey's CaringBridge website. The Harvey family is using it to keep family and friends updated in one place as Norma's recovery continues. We appreciate your love and support.

On December 13, 2018, Norma was transferred from Jefferson County Hospital to the University of Iowa's Intensive Care Unit following an accidental fall that resulted in a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Doctors successfully operated on Norma in order to relieve pressure and other symptoms following the trauma experienced. As of December 22, 2018, Norma is showing progress daily specifically in seeing more bodily movement. She has shown signs of physical responsiveness when asked to squeeze hands, wave at visitors, and give a thumbs up. She is still resting her eyes and though there is limited movement in certain parts of the body more impacted by the trauma, she’s showing remarkable recovery in such a short time already. It is essential during these next few weeks that Norma is not overly stimulated and gets her rest, per physician advice. Therefore visits are very limited due to her risk during the early stages of recovery, especially with limited space (1-3 visitors at a time allowed by the unit) and the accommodations made for Norma's immediate family. Family visit daily, including visits by her grandkids from near and far. She is surrounded by love and positivity as nurses and hospital staff help to facilitate her regaining cognitive and physical function.

It is with great sadness we share that Grandma (Norma) Harvey passed away yesterday - January 14, 2019. She had been transferred to the University of Iowa again to undergo surgery to help her brain injury and during preparation for this operation, the family was notified she passed away. The family is now back in Fairfield planning her visitation and celebration of life ceremony. We know, without a doubt, Grandma appreciated all of the support and love during her fight. Please send your thoughts and prayers to Grandpa (Gary Harvey) and family, as well as the many friends and loved ones who knew her, at this time.

Visitation will be held 6-8pm, Thursday, January 17th at Behner Funeral Home, Fairfield, IA, Celebration of Life service will be 1 pm, Friday, January 18th with Pastor Danny Cary and Pastor Dick Larson officiating at Behner Funeral Home.
