Journal entry by Eric Brubaker

On community: As a band, we like to talk about building community through music. I have to confess that at times this has seemed a bit “pie in the sky”. At times the crass side of the music business shines through a little more than I would like. But this experience has taught me that there is something real there. In the midst of all the driving and hauling gear and countless other mundane tasks, we have formed real relationships with many beautiful people. Friends and strangers alike have flooded our mailbox with handwritten cards and opened their wallets to help with medical expenses. And we as a grieving family want to reach out to those people and let them know how we are doing in the coming months as I return to the road.

We have decided to take the summer to travel together as much as possible, with the family following along to many Steel Wheels gigs. In an attempt to stay in touch, we have opened a few new channels of communication. We will be blogging at, and sharing pictures on Instagram with @iwillbegrateful. We don’t feel grateful for what has happened to our family, but we are trying to set an intention to turn towards community. We don’t feel brave or strong, and we certainly aren’t an inspiration. A lot of the time we feel sad, angry, or just numb. We are hoping that sharing our journey will be a healthy part of our process, and not a distraction. We are sincerely hoping that letting our guard down in this way is not just opening the doors to invasions of privacy. But nobody knows what we are feeling or what we need unless we tell them, so we are inviting you to follow along with us on our journey.
