Nick’s Story

Site created on September 6, 2021

About Nick:
Nick is a much-loved husband, brother, father, grandpa, coach, educator, and friend. He and Colleen have been pillars of the Canton SD community for many years, serving as mentors and role models for multiple generations of Canton youth. After retiring, they moved to Grand Island, NE to be closer to their beloved grandbabies.

Nick is the epitome of a servant leader. He is passionate about his beliefs, standing up for the underdog, and using his gifts to make the world a better place. He's the kind of person who would do anything for anyone and never expect recognition or anything in return.

Over Labor Day weekend, Nick was admitted to the hospital in Grand Island for complications from COVID-19. This website was started as a way to help the community support and uplift Nick and his family, just like they have always done for all of us. We appreciate your prayers and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

From Tammy:

Hi friends,

It has been a while since I have updated this post. To be honest, not a lot of change. I think I said in the last post that we were no longer doing the weaning and that Nick is on the ventilator 24/7. This has helped him to be able to stay awake more during the day and be more alert.

Colleen continues to work three days a week and spend the other four with him. She did manage to get him in his chair and out of his room for Valentine's Day. The staff at Madonna Put on a nice Valentines dinner for them and there is a picture of them in the gallery.

Paul and I had planned to go see them in January over the Martin Luther King weekend, but the bitter cold kept us home. We went over Presidents weekend in February along with our friend Ilsa Clayton. Nick has a regular crew who comes to see him and he appreciates those visits so much. Colleen keeps bulletin boards of pictures that people send him or they take when they're visiting. You can see one in the background of our latest pictures. There are lots of inspirational quotes scattered throughout that he gets regularly from his friends Steven and Jane Olsen.

We are looking forward to spring, and maybe getting him outside once in a while again. I think it helps to break up the monotony of his days. Please continue to write, send pictures and any other form of support that you're able to provide. It is appreciated more than you know. Cards can be sent to:
