Journal entry by Cammie Casarez —
Hello friends and family! I know it's been awhile since an update on Nick's conditions but he has been doing so well I didn't feel the need to report. He is recovering with amazing strides, which includes Graduating High School and big plans for college. However, today he is having a new surgery on his airway because of Idiopathic subglottic stenosis. Which is simply the narrowing of the airway do to built-up scar tissue from repeated intubations! He says, "I just wanna breathe easy" so that is the plan! The doctor will use a CO2 laser and a balloon dilator inorder to open his airway. The scar tissue grew back and the area is about 1mm in diameter, for the airway that hindereds him from taking in 100% of the oxygen he needs. Especially considering his conditions within the brain! He is currently in surgery which is just underway. The procedure will last about an hour, with a two hour interval for recovery time. Hopefully this is the last surgery Nick will have to endure. As always, keep Nick in your thoughts and prayers, you are all amazing supports. I'll keep everyone updated as the day continues!!
