Site created on August 20, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.
On August 8, 2020 Nathan Muti was involved in a motorcycle accident. He was life flighted to OHSU where he had surgery on what surgeons are calling a complete spinal cord injury. He most likely will not walk again.  While we may not know all the details or long term outcomes yet, we know Nathan will need all of our love and support.  Nathan is a dedicated educator, an athlete, and loyal friend. There is no doubt that his energetic, positive spirit will carry him through this.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Nathan Muti

Updates are sometimes difficult for me to complete because I feel like so much is happening and nothing is happening all at once.

Today, I think I can say, has been the best day since the accident. I slept for more than 8 hours last night. My medical team has been attentively working around the clock to ensure that I stay comfortable, and I think that it also helped to have my mom sleep in the same room with me last night. As corny as it sounds, her familiar touch and voice after a nightmare was all that was needed for me to slide back into the deepest sleep of my life. Holding her hand was such a simple thing, but this small act carried with it more power than any medication ever could.

I spent a couple hours sitting upright in the chair today. Much of that time, I was plugging along trying to play the guitar. My playing is getting better, but upon hearing my own voice, I sensed that it still sounds unsure and weak. The pain medication and lack of sleep are also affecting the playing and singing, but that will not diminish how proud I am of my body for being able to sing and play again. I’m doing it! Music is a great recovery tool because it allows me a tangible goal. If you want to hear a little clip of how I sound, check out my Facebook page.

Having my friend Jon here today has been really nice. He’s the one who got me into surfing, and he is the one I trust when it comes to giving information to me straight. After all, his whole line on teaching me surfing was this: “Put your leash on this ankle here. I’m going to be surfing way out there. You can surf in the whitewater there. When you get cold, the car is unlocked, and you can wait for me.” I can tell you, I’ve never met a better teacher!

Today has been pretty good so far, but it was made all the better by the thrilling news I just received that I tested negative for COVID a second time, which means that now I will be able to get out of here and into a rehab facility, where I will grow stronger and learn how to take care of my sexy new body.
