Life is still all about baseball.....

I didn't realize the RV baseball team was playing yesterday at the same field they had won State on two years ago to the day.. unitl a friend texted me on if I knew how to get there. She hadn't heard yet that nate had passed.. and I wasnt about to ruin her moment as a mom.. although.. I smiled- knowing where nate would be-

we were very touched to hear that they did a moment of silence before the game in honor of nate, and how amazing, awestruck, phenomenal it was that after the game as RV went to the outfield, Grandview went as well and linked together in a circle, players and coaches, to say a prayer. God is ever so amazing.

Nate's spirit was felt. RV won the first game with exactly 17 hits. Then they went on to win the second game with exactly 17 hits..and by 11 runs. Nate's two numbers. Little moments like that can become God moments to me. Moments to make me smile and let love in.

The candle light vigil at the field last night was very touching, special and heart felt. Share the stories, shine with the memories, all the while keeping hearts open to know he is still here.
I love you, nate.

hello-
We are back from the beach.
It was a good trip- we did get to see the ER at a san diego hospital.. and all ER rooms take forever....
we went on Monday- spent a good chunk of the day there-(lip issue, rash and needed to know blood counts)  and then God gave us Tuesday. Beautiful day- perfect temp- amazing ocean colors- yet...
IT IS GOOD TO BE HOME!!!!!
will treasure all the memories-
We have been at the docs all day.. still here actually.. getting blood...
She also recommended having the home care nurses come out to help manage some of the pain. We shall hear from them tomorrow.
He could have a possible infection which contributed to the lip issue.. or the rash issue.. or .. so he is starting some heavier anti-biotics
He is hanging in there.
Its been a big day- and we are making some adjustments at home for him. We will be home in about an hour or so.
We are still so very grateful for the amazing trip and for all the amazing people we consider angels who are making this easier. We are so very blessed. Thank you!
I know the words are not enough to describe how deeply grateful we are.
Also need to say Go Mustangs!! Good luck tomorrow.. we will be there in spirit!  :)
Love and Blessings

Hello-
it is overcast at the beach today.
we are having a peaceful, slow Sunday morning.
We had nate playing cards yesterday.. and will probably do it again today. He has been tired- and still working on the balance with food.
He did get some more sun- and has a nice tan going.
we have had some visitors.. my mom stopped by for a quick visit, the Dolan's are here and I am getting a treat tomorrow with a visit from a friend in the SF area. We were pregnant together when I had Nate and she had a girl Breanna. I am very excited!!! :)
we have seen a ton of dolphins today. That is always special. we have seen seals as well- and lots of surfers... and there are volleyball nets right by us so we have amused nate by playing..
He is having fun- not doing a whole lot- but just being by the beach is so relaxing- he has an incredible view of the ocean- and the sound of waves crashing just echoes-
Life is good in this perspective of now.
Much love, great appreciation, and blessings-

Hello-
Another warm, sunny, amazing day at the beach.
It started out great for Nate as we saw dolphins. There were a  few of them lingering in our view in a good fishing spot. It was cool.
He was able to sit in the sun for a bit today and get nagged from his mom about sunblock. Which if you ever read a bottle of SPF 4 tanning oil you will see it actually calls itself sunblock. Yes- he read it out loud. still has the onery spirit.
Food hasn't been his friend today- yet he seems to be better with that now.
He did enjoy getting out on the beach today for a little bit.
Some of us ventured down the beach a bit and found a hurt baby seal. Uncle Mike stayed with it for a bit after animal control was called. Nate convinced Jena it was the dolphins that hurt it- so I am not sure she will be as excited as us to see dolphins again.. ha ha
Moment to moment- the beach, the roar of the waves, the night sky, family jokes, friends, etc- moments to make memories.
Thank you... breathe in your moments.. knowing how much we appreciate and love you.
I know I will never be able to repay for these moments we are having- and I know I will be forever grateful.
Much love and blessings-
~Sal

Hello-
I hope you all are enjoying the snow.. :) I do miss it yet...

We did make it to San Diego.
It is the Jurney clan.. all of us plus the Rocky Ford Jurneys. Jena and her mom came as well and we will have drop in visitors thru the week as well. Way cool-
This is our miracle to have it all worked out so quickly and it is awesome.
Nates room overlooks the beach. It has this huge window to provide a panoramic view. He did sit out in the sun as well. We are right on the beach..
and truly- thank you to all the miracle workers who helped make this happen. We are so blessed to be wrapped in the love of life. Truly- we are forever grateful.
Uncle Mike managed to become the 'old one' tonight. It was pretty funny.. Nate is keeping up with his sense of humor.
I will keep you posted as much as I can.
Love and Blessings -

Hello-
Okay- My motto has been...go with the flow.. which is sometimes a slow drip.. and other times a raging rapid.. either way.. go with the flow.. to much work to paddle upstream...
and life flows
Nate finished his last week of cyber knife. We did do an extra day. Dr McNeely didn't like how much pain Nate was in and had Nate pin point where it was, went back to the scans and wanted to give it a whirl to eliminate some of the discomfort. So we did go thurs as well and to the oncology doc today.
Tides are raging.
nate needed blood today. the right kidney getting radiation probably effected the hormone that is in the kidney creating red cells. So we spent a few extra hours geting that taken care of today.
The doc also advised us to go on our trip now. No need to wait.. go NOW. So we are looking in to it. Not sure how it will work... bring nate to beach or bring beach to nate. It will work out how it is suppose to.. go with the flow.
So still keeping it all in perspective. Life is an amazing ride when you choose to see it that way. so we are prioritizing and choosing what is important in our now. Now is what matters.
Thank you for always being here..taking this journey with us.. prayers, kind words, encouraging thoughts, ..all is in our current to keep the flow going.. we so feel the love.
Thank you..more than you could imagine
love and blessings

Hello-
Well- we survived prom.. LOL.. I added some pics...

nate is doing okay today. We did do cyber knife and will do that last treatment on Wednesday.
He is zonked. It does drain him.
He had an ..okay.. weekend. Saturday was tiring.. but Sunday he was up a bit. He is not feeling as nauseated and kept food down.. now to increase the appetite...
We have been using IV pain meds.. and I think that helps the tummy.. but not sure if it makes a difference with pain.
Mark had him walking a bit outside yesterday... which is good. Movement is always helpful.
Cyber knife does give him the higher fever.. so we will be watching that tonight.
We also have an appt set up for Fri with the oncology doc to re-assess and see what to do from here.

I will keep you all posted... so far looks like this week is just one more cyber knife.. and trying to keep the balance to try to get him to eat more.
You are all very much appreciated... truly...

Love and Blessings

" A person's ultimate freedom is the ability to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances."
~Victor Frakl

Nate went in for cyber knife today and they did do both spots. He is exhausted.
The concern is to make him more comfortable. The idea is to have cyber knife relieve some of the pain but unfortunately it gets worse before better. So we do have him on IV pain meds right now. It should make his tummy recover a little bit too so he can eat...
He is doing okay. He is hurting.... but keeping a good attitude.. making fun of us, yellling at the TV (Rockies and Nuggets)  and still giving his siblings a hard time.
Life is as normal as it gets for us.
He has slept a bit today....
we are hoping for a better weekend...lots of activity with prom for Dave and Nicole...baseball for Dan.
We are taking it moment to moment..

Thank you for being there. We do so appreciate all of you. Not sure how we would have made it this far without all of you.. truly.. thank you.
Enjoy your weekend.. keep it in perspective..
Much Love
~Sal

Nate’s Story

Site created on June 4, 2006

To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did. When God takes something from your grasp, he's not punishing you, but merely opening your hands to receive something better. The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.

A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to it's old dimensions.-

Oliver Wendell Holmes

It started with Nate complaining of knee pain. He had broken his right ankle playing basebktball and the doc thought it was overcompensating from having a cast. After following docs orders on ice, Aleve, and P/T exercises we went to a knee doctor. Nate was diagnosed with bone cancer on April 25, 2006. He went through four rounds of IV and IA chemotherapy . He has had surgery on July 19,2006. He has finished four different rounds of IV chemo since then and is going through physical therapy. He is a fighter! He has been working hard on getting his strength back.

Nate has done great. He played ball this past spring(07)- and went to Costa Rica in the summer. The scans for Sept were not so great. They found cancer nodules on his lungs. He has been on the immunity booster treatment since then and will have yet another surgery Nov 28th to remove a cancerous nodule from his lung. He is attitude is great and we will just move forward to get this all done. They did add a chemo agent to his treatment. It is still experimental. We now have started the new year with a clot from his port. The port is out and he will do shots to help thin the blood and dissolve the clot. As of Feb 08 he decided to bypass any more experimental treatments. The nodules have stil been growing despite feeling like he has the flu every weekend. So he just wants to have fun for his senior year, play ball and graduate. Then he will look at surgery or other options.

Nate had the surgery on June 6th. He did not recover well. they did take out all the cancer and the last scans showed know cancer nodules in his lungs. But- he has not been fully himself. They cannot determine if it is permanent. It is mostly memory issues but the neurological testing showed slowness in processing as well.
This May, they found the cancer had returned.
