Journal entry by Naomi Moore

I have been volunteering at the Hollywood Food Coalition since January of this year, as my partner is the lead Friday night coordinator. This is typically a 3-hour shift; the bulk of it is serving food to the homeless, and the rest is cleaning up for the next shift. During my time serving the homeless, I generally find myself in a state of immense gratitude for my life. Things that are easy to take for granted start coming into my awareness as such bountiful blessings. My mental health, the clothes on my back, my friends and family, and the fact that I have a home and loved ones to go back to once the night is over are just a few of the blessings that come to mind.

It has become a beautiful practice to look upon the faces of those less fortunate and see them as the humans they are. Many of them are quiet and don't say much or don't make eye contact, and others are louder and wear pink wigs or clown noses. The understanding that each of these individuals has their own story that has brought them to this place helps me in my real life to practice non-judgement with any human I come into contact with, even outside of the Hollywood Food Co.

There were a few key elements brought to my awareness on this particular Friday (Oct. 4) which I found especially profound. One was the unique souls who came as volunteers (pictured). I served fruit, bread, and pasta salad with a first-timer woman who had a radiantly positive energy about her. She was engaging in conversations with some of the people we served, and I was inspired by her openness to share and listen to people she had never met before. Seeing the volunteers join us over the last nine months has been very heart-warming. The volunteers simply want to give and support their community through their hard work and presence. Even though there are infinite other activities to do on a Friday night in LA, this is the choice of servitude that we make to help the collective.

The other element I noticed on this night in particular was the gratitude coming from the people we were serving. Probably 5 or 6 different people told us "thank you" for serving them and taking the time out of our lives to be there. This is not always the typical case in my months serving. The purpose of helping those less fortunate of course is not to be noticed for the good deed, but when several individuals do notice and share their appreciation, you can't help but feel really good about the impact you're making 😊

If you feel a call to help feed the homeless in Hollywood, please feel free to reach out for details. Hollywood Food Coalition serves one square meal every day, rain or shine, and on holidays too. It is an exceptional outreach program serving up to 200+ people every night for the last 31 years. Thanks for reading and God bless!
