Dear Kathy, Dale and Rob, We have been praying for your mom since we found out she was so ill and have continued to lift you before our Father during this time of loss.  I cannot fully communicate the impact your parents and your family and the Covenant Church had on our family in such a positive way.  So many of my memories of Mexico include the Reeds!  I have just been watching the last half of the English service for your mom.  Thank you for sharing so clearly from your hearts.  What an amazing woman, mother, wife your mom was and is as she now is with Jesus in person.  We continue to lift each of you and your families up that you may know the comfort of Christ, his peace and his love.  With love, Bettina (Delgado) and Richard Collins

Our prayers are with you during this season of loss and remembrance. We were blessed to know her! Nancy planted a lot of seeds and her legacy is in the beautiful trees of faith bearing the fruit of love. She was an undeniable force for Jesus and a model of Christian service. May the love of friends bring you comfort and the promises of Christ bring you peace.

Hello, Nancy I do not know if you remember me but I am the mom of Leonardo and Vanessa. We lived in Cee where you and Gerardo usually went to worship Jesus. I want to send lots of love and tell you that I still having the Bible you gave to me. I love you and our father loves you too. Be strong in this time. I love you.

I often wonder, myself, about the incidental contacts I have with people and whether they leave any impression. I can't imagine I would cross Nancy's mind, but her kind, practical advice often crosses mine, and I can't help but be grateful for the short time we spent time together. You are lucky, indeed, to have had such a beautiful person, inside and out, as your mom. Please know that good wishes and love for you, Nancy, and your family, are now and always in my heart.

Dale, Kathy and Rob - i am so sorry to hear about your mom’s illness. It makes me so sad. Thanks for including me on her updates. I loved working with your mom back in the 90’s in World Mission. She was always so positive and loving to me. She was a perfect boss and I’m thankful to have been blessed to be able to work for her. Please tell her this and give her either a big hug or a big hand squeeze from me. Kimberly Rylicki

Pastor Roberto Ghione       April 12th
Hi Dale, I'm Pastor Roberto Ghione from Simi Valley, California. I was a disciple of your father and also worked with Nancy supporting the development of churches on the border of Mexico, when she lived in San Diego (Mount Miguel). I feel very sad for the news that I just received. I was planning to visit your mother in Chicago last month, but all ECC meetings were canceled. Please let me know news of your mom. I am praying for strength for all of you.

Sincerely, Roberto Ghione.

She has lived such a rich and plentiful life! Nancy has blessed so many people in so many places! It is amazing how one life, one life! can have such an impact. Our prayers are with you all as you accompany her to Jordan's shore. The Lord will receive her with open arms and say, Well done, good and faithful servant!

Please tell her we love her, and that she has always been a blessing to us, in each part of the journey where our paths have crossed.

Much love, Esly Carvalho and Ken Grant

To my dearest friend and classmate of long ago. Nancy you remember when we were in high school together and we had sleep overs. We were also Cheerleaders together at San Ramon High School. I love you like a sister and always hoped we would be able to visit now and then. Remember when I went to your other residence in southern California too? I can't believe this is happening to you as I know it will happen to all of us sooner or later. After all we are in our 80's, but when it happens it is such a shock. Please stay with us for a few more years. You have such a wonderful family and extended church family. Their hearts are so heavy now as mine is. We don't want to lose you but I know you will be received with open arms by the Lord because you are his faithful servant more than the rest of us.

My dear one, I don't know what else to say except I love you and hope you are in no pain. Sylvia Hamblin

Dear Nancy and kids,

What a shock! To think we were cruising together to and from Hawaii just a couple of months ago! I’m so glad you joined our mt Miguel group on that trip and gave us an additional time to enjoy your company.

You have been a wonderful friend since we moved to Mt Miguel 4 1/2 years ago. We love you and your wonderful kids.

Much love,

Babs and Dave

I bear witness to my gratitude to my Heavenly Daddy for having met Nancy and Gerardo Reed, and having received from them abundant instruction in the knowledge of the Bible, through the systematic courses of study in the time that they dedicated to Spain in the city of A Coruña.

And I am also happy to have received inspiration from them like missionaries. I'm a witness of their commitment to God our Father and to the work of His risen son Jesus Christ. It was a placer for me to have had them as my guests in my apartment in Corcubión and from there to have deployed together a missionary effort to the hearts of people in the last part of Spanish territory: the lands of Finisterre.

Today, from London, I send a big hug to Nancy and to the great offspring that they have sown and that they have beautifully reaped.

(1st Letter of John 3: 1-3) Christ is always our hope. Hallelujah...!

Dear Nancy, continued prayers for peace and a knowledge that you are loved by our God, your family and your many friends. Thank you for your positive and encouraging spirit. I am grateful for your years of ministering to so many!
Love you,

Margie Swenson on Monday, April 13, 2020
Dear, dear Nancy,

How we thank God for your life, for your faithfulness in friendship and ministry, for your example to younger Christ followers, for your leadership in mission.... The list goes on and on. You, Jerry, and the children were at our first ever church visit as newly commissioned missionaries. You were the “main-liners”; they let us wave from the congregation. We learned so much that day! We were so impressed with your amazing kids!

Over the years we have had many opportunities to do life and ministry together. You have hosted us. We have hosted you. We will never forget the day you and Jerry arrived in Colombia for an extended visit. Instead of our preparing a meal for you following your long journey, you prepared the most delicious Mexican meal for the whole staff. Remarkable!!

I (Margie) will never forget our journey from Colombia to Ecuador for one of those early CIPE planning meetings. We ended up staying in the home of your friends. They were incredibly gracious and hospitable. When they showed us where we would be sleeping, we almost “lost it”. We started laughing as we got into a tiny little bed, the two of us. We laughed and laughed until we realized our hosts might be wondering what in the world was happening. I’m laughing just remembering! Not sure either of us actually slept that night.

Years later, we had the joy of visiting you in Spain after we became the Directors of Missionary Personnel for the Covenant. You were serving with Rob, Nancita, and the Maldonados. What a team!. You were marvelous hosts. The birthday hat you “made us buy” is still being used, we imagine, by the Serve Globally Staff for birthdays. Though we had “traded places” in ministry we continued to learn from you and Jerry.

We have been friends and partners in ministry for nearly 50 years. We were so grateful to visit with you and Jerry a few days before he entered his Savior’s presence. We had the privilege of celebrating Jerry’s life through our tears both in San Diego and in Chicago.

And now, we hear that you are suffering. We know that the human prognosis isn’t what we would wish. Yet, we rejoice with you that this present suffering will result in Glory! We pray for healing, according to God’s perfect purposes in your life. We pray for weeks and months of sweet family times and relief from pain. We pray for that great and glorious day when you, and all of us, will hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” We pray for your longed for reunion with Jerry and so many who have gone ahead of us into their eternal reward.

Nancy, we love you and look forward with joy to our next visit!

Dear Nancy,

We were new missionaries in Thailand when you and Jerry came to visit us in Udon Thani. That was one of the most encouraging moments in our mission career. I have this memory that at one point we were trying to get into Johnson's house and the gate was locked but you both were good sports and climbed right over. Seems you had lots of experience doing that in other places? I remember lots of laughs and good discussions about raising kids overseas.
Later you advised on what church to attend when we moved to Chicago and you were right about Grace. It has been a home for us for these 15 years. It has always been special reconnecting with you during each visit. Now you will be joining all those we love who have gone ahead, including Gretchen's dad. May you know our prayers surround you and the lessons that you taught live on in the next generation of those involved in God's mission.
Peace in this transition.

Dear Nancy, my mind is running away with all the years we worked together at headquarters and continued to connect after retirement. It was just a few months ago that I was at Windsor Park and we had a chance to visit (and we got lost returning from your apartment to the Martin's!) And I made you call me when you got back to your apartment to be sure you found your way home! And now this very sudden news that you are "marching to Zion". You may not read this, but I know your dear family will convey my love, prayers, and thoughts to you when it is right - and they will know that those same prayers and thoughts are with each one of your children and their families.
Jesus - and Jerry - are waiting for you with open arms.

Dear Nancy,
27 years ago you came to our apartment with a baby gift for our first child; a cool pair of pajama's, which have lived on with many following children. Your visit was so memorable, as we were new to the church and I didn't know you knew us, much less take the time and effort to share our happiness. That visit has never left my heart and for that you have been a continual blessing for all these years. One of my life's longings is to look for and lift up hero's. You are one of my hero's, as a mother, wife, spiritual disciple, lover of God. Thank you for being a hero I and others can follow and learn from. Thank you for the heritage you have created for your kids, guiding them to be hero's . You truly are blessed to be a blessing.
We Love You.

Hi Nancy, Greetings in the Hope of the Easter and the resurrection! Thank you for your life of service to God and others. You have been an example for so many including Ronna and me. We will never forget how you and Jerry came to our mission house in Japan and so thoroughly cleaned everything while we were trying to get our babies and stuff ready to leave for the States on short notice. You were in Japan to relax and enjoy some time with family and friends, but you gave that precious time to care for some newbie missionaries that you hardly knew at the time. This is just one example of how you have lived your life. Praying for God's shalom as you rest in the palm of his hand.

Dear Nancy, I wanted you to know that you mean a lot to me. You always supported me in prayer and advise. You saw me at my lowest points and lifted me up with your words and your smile. Rosalie and I will be praying for you in your fight. You taught me that the power of prayer is the key to life. We must turn to God for all things and he will answer.
I will keep watching and thinking of your and pray that you find comfort and peace. May God lay his healing hand on your and give you comfort and healing so that you may continue your journey through his words. We love and miss you Mucho. Rosalie and James Warner

Nancy, Sabron recently made me aware you were at Windsor Park in Carol Stream., and now receiving special care. So many memories flood my thoughts - your family visit in Zionsville years ago, later, after you and Jerry and family moved to the Chicago area and North Park, your children's weddings, shared meal with you and Jerry before you moved to California, etc. Your cheerful, energetic, purposeful attitude and approach were always contagious. What a beautiful family you raised! What a beautiful outreach you made in carrying Christ's message to so many! As you are tested in current medical challenges, know the loving presence of the Holy Spirit, through whom we all have contact. Big Hugs to you!

Hi Nancy, Sorry to learn about your recent illness. It has been a long time since we have been
together but I have kept up with you through John. Will always remember our early morning jogs and the inspiring conversations. I am glad to know your children are there with you.
You have been a second mother to my son and a blessing for me. Love Joanne

Hi Dale, Kathy and Rob - am sorry to hear about your mom. We shared many hours jogging and of course talking. She helped me through many problems. As you all know. she is a wonderful person and I am sure will be greatly missed. Tell her I am praying for her and hoping it all goes painlessly. Joanne

Dale Reed: Joanne, This is Dale replying here. Yes, John spent countless hours at our house. I also spent countless hours at yours! I remember with such great fondness the trips to Acapulco with you. One of my favorite pictures that that time is the picture of John and me with those swordfish from our deep-sea diving expedition. It's crazy, but I think that was the first fish I ever caught! It spoiled me for any other fishing forever. I also remember the long drive to Puerto Vallarta, where we stayed at the Osuna's apartment. Even today everytime I hear Neal Diamond I think back to listening to his music on these trips. I also think back to John and I "bartending" at various parties around Hacienda, along with our whistling and singing entertainment. Blessings to you! I get updates on you and Peter from time to time when I talk to John. It is a pleasure to have him close by, with him in Milwaukee and me in Chicago, with the perspective that comes from so many decades of friendship.

Querida Nancy,

Nancy, deeply sorry to learn of your current serious illness. Pam joins me in promising you of our love and prayers as you endure this present suffering. Be assured that we love you deeply and grieve with you over what you having to endure at present. We have so many warm memories of our years together at NPTS and Grace ECC, including time in each other's homes and, most recently, the weekend shared with retired Covenant ministers at Mission Springs a few years back. We have twice stayed in your homes, first at 53xx N. Spaulding in 1995 in our transition to the NPTS faculty and at Mt. Miguel when Bob was speaking at the village. We love you deeply, Nancy, and will uphold you as you walk with the Good Shepherd into the peace and wholeness promised by the Gospel about which you bore such appealing and faithful witness all those decades. I'm remembering today that Jerry died on Easter Sunday after such a short illness. I'm praying that you will have much more time with your family - yet our hope and joy is in the resurrection. Love you, Nancy. The memories will never leave us. Thanks for your life, your sisterhood, and companerimo in the gospel. Dear Nancy,

I want to say thank you for your friendship over the past 15 or so years and for your godly example of being a mom, wife, grandmother, and all-around amazing and faithful servant of God! I have learned so much from you, not only from the sweet times when you and Jerry would stay at our house, but also from the many many times that Kathy passed along great wisdom she had learned from you. I know that all of us women in our old Small Group pray that we could serve God as faithfully as you have over the long haul and leave the same kind of powerful legacy you have in your children and grandchildren.

I pray you are flooded with peace and joy as you head Home.

Hello Nancy,
Vick Halterman here. I was totally off guard today, Easter Sunday, to learn of your condition. I am so sorry you've had to suffer so much.
But I do remember those wonderful days at UC Davis, and the 'gang' in the InterVarsity group with you and Jerry! What great memories. I remember that Sunday, long ago, when you tried to hide your engagement ring! Your joy was 'written all over yours and Jerry's faces! Hard to hide that, I know.
Thank you for being such an encourager to me, and strong example of the life of a believer, during those years.
I remember when our family visited yours in Ecuador in 1970, and the messages on the walls of the 'special' powder room under the stairway. How creative was that, I thought??
Ours is the kind of friendship that will never fade, though miles separate us. It never has; It never will.
May you and your children and grandchildren experience the Lord's Great Peace in the days ahead. He knows. He is our Strong Tower. He never sleeps or slumbers.

Hello Mrs. Reed,
I'm not sure if you remember me from Mount Miguel (Maintenance Department) but I sure do remember you! You were one of my favorite residents at Mount Miguel! You lived in apartment 1019 and for some reason whenever I went to your apartment to help you out with something I always went to the back door and you didn't mind at all. I miss the small talk we had while you were at Mount Miguel. I know I only knew you for a short time but you stuck in my heart and mind.
My dad was also diagnosed with AML back in 2013 and went home with the Lord in February of 2016, so I understand what you are going through. Just know, that the Lord only does this for those who can handle it. You, my dear, are a true soldier of the Lord! I know you have touched many lives, including mine, and you will continue to do so! Heaven is a beautiful place....I know because I have been there at one point in my life. You are a wonderful woman! Know that everyone on this page posting messages to you loves you!

Hi Nancy, On this Resurrection morning, I am just learning that you are very much on that journey that will lead to "the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting!" We will be upholding you in prayer in the days and weeks to come! We carry good memories of you and your family at many levels, maybe going back to 1974-75 when my brother Rod (still in San Jose, CA) was with you as a short-termer in Ecuador...through the years of your leadership for Latin America for the ECC while Jerry was teaching at the seminary [as Mary Lynn and I went out to Zaire/Congo, Africa... and over then as we made our way into the Latin America arena ourselves serving in Oaxaca, Mexico (2000-2004). Have loved the way you have kept in touch the last dozen years or so with updates on your dear family--kids and grandkids! May you sense all their love surrounding you even in these challenging days of social distancing! The peace of the Risen Lord be with you now and forever! With our love, Dennis & Mary Lynn (Christensen) Carlson
PS-We move to Denton, TX on Wednesday to be near our daughter Kristin & Scott in this next season of life, having retired February 29 after 13 years in pastoral ministry at Faith Covenant, Farmington Hills, MI

Dearest Nancy,

Dale has been keeping me up to date with your condition. I’m terribly sorry to hear of your illness. It must be difficult to be going through this during a time of pandemic when those who you love can’t be with you physically nearly as much as you or they would like. It would be so nice to just be able to sit and hold your hand and reminisce. But please know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of the countless people who have been blessed to have you in their lives. I am one of those.

I wonder, as you think of years gone by, if you consider that you actually raised 4 children, not three? I certainly see it that way, and consider you to be my second mother. I’m certain that between 7th grade and 12th grade I spent as much time in your home and in your company than I did with my own family. Certainly, some of my most vivid memories and most formative experiences are those years spent with you and Jerry, my surrogate parents. I think this would be important for you to know: that if I know anything about Jesus Christ, I learned that from you. But there is so much more: what I know of discipline, of reasoned and considered judgement, of applying myself wholeheartedly to the task at hand, of never giving up, I learned from you. You taught a young man how to respect, value, love, and cherish a woman. If I know how to wash a dish, scrub a pan, fold a fitted bed sheet, or iron a dress shirt, those skills came from your teaching. I learned how to drive a car in your baby blue VW combi van. I can subdue an unruly child by using the Vulcan grip. And after 45 years, I still cannot get the “Rat Fink” ear worm out of my head—my own children were roused from their sleep every morning of their childhoods by your immortal words and tune: ‘Rat Fink! Da da da DA da dada!” Yes, I learned these all these things and more from you.

You and Jerry were spiritual guides to not just me, Dale, Kathy, and Rob, but many many other children in Mexico. You shared your love for Jesus openly and generously with all of us. Amid all the tasks and responsibilities you had — church planting, fundraising, teaching, leading, homemaking, raising your own family — you still found quality time give guidance, love, kindness, and acceptance to someone like me. And after you were done doing all those amazing things, you went on and had a life of remarkable impact and significance to thousands upon thousands of other people around the world. When Jerry died, those at his memorial service recalled the astounding global impact of a great man. I loved Jerry as a father. The old saw of “behind every great man is an even greater woman” was never more true than in your case. Jerry would not have been half the great man he was without YOU faithfully — not behind him — but by his side; an equal partner in all things. Nancy, do you know how radical you were in your time?? Do you know how radical that still is today?

I’m sure this seems like a eulogy. In a way it is. I regret that I did not have the opportunity to share what Jerry meant in my life before he died. So I share these small things with you now, while you still live, to give you comfort. And I know that you, of all people, would acknowledge that death comes swiftly, and you would not tread gingerly around that fact. And because of what you taught me, i also know you will be looking at this with dispassionate acceptance, resting in your faith in where it is that you are going. That soon you will be with your Lord and with your beloved Jerry and all the others who have gone before you. Death is just the beginning. It is peace. It’s a celebration. And I celebrate you, Nancy Reed.

I will probably never get to see or speak with you again and that is my loss. But KNOW that you live on. In THIS world and the next, you are eternal. All that you are, or ever were lives on in me, and my children, and their children after that, and in the countless others that you have touched and blessed over the years you spent with us. We love you, Nancy.

Sylvia Hamblin: Thank you John for those kind and sincere words to our beloved Nancy.

Querida Nancy,
