Monica’s Story

Site created on July 12, 2018

Welcome to Monica Nolin's Caring Bridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. We cannot tell you how much your concern, outpouring of love, prayers, and support mean to us all.

On July 9th, 2018, mom (Monica) was in a terrible car accident, and honestly, she's lucky to be alive. Her guardian angels were watching out for her, that is for sure. As a result of the accident, she has a broken pelvis, broken ankle, broken collar bone, and broken ribs all along the front and back of her left side. She sustained lacerations to her liver and spleen, as well as three holes in her bladder, all of which were caused by her broken ribs and pelvis. She also had an aortic dissection, which is usually fatal in an accident such as this. Per the medical staff, she was coherent at the scene of the accident, mostly complaining of pain and difficulty breathing (who wouldn't with that many broken bones). Miraculously, she had NO HEAD TRAUMA, of which we are SO thankful (silver lining). She underwent emergency surgery upon arrival to the hospital, primarily to halt the internal bleeding. However, her survival still required  multiple units of blood. The amazingly skilled surgeons at the Billings Clinic worked long and hard to save her life, not knowing whether she'd make it through, and for that we'll be forever grateful!

Currently, mom resides in the ICU of the Billings Clinic, and in the diligent hands of the medical staff. We appreciate each and every one of the employees for their excellent care and kindness. Mom has always been proud to work at the Billings Clinic, and we can see why!

So far she has undergone surgical repair of her pelvis, and is scheduled for repair of her ribs tomorrow (7/13/18).  She is still on a ventilator to assist her with deep breathing (thus preventing pneumonia), which she wouldn’t be able to do on her own due to her broken ribs. The tentative plan is to remove the ventilator post surgery tomorrow if all goes well. Her healing and recovery will be a lengthy process, and we will keep you posted along the way. Keep on praying!!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Andrea Kneeland

Hello all! Sincere apologies for the delayed update on mom’s status! I hope each and every one of you had a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
Mom has been doing incredibly well over the past few months!! In fact, so well that Physical Therapy discharged her in November, and Occupational Therapy in December. She continues to see speech therapy, but mostly for vocal cord rehab due to prolonged intubation & short term tracheostomy.
Her mobility is improving every day. She’s a little extra cautious when walking on ice, wet surfaces, etcetera (as we all are/should be). She does have some shoulder discomfort at times due to her broken ribs and collar bone. Her hips bother her when walking for extended periods, due to the breaks and fractures sustained to her pelvis. She had a follow up appointment with her orthopedic surgeon (Dr. Hobby) last Thursday. X-rays were taken of her pelvis and collar bone. They showed much improvement and are looking great! Yay!!
Mom’s been at home now since the end of September. Her sister Shelli was there with her until mid December, which was incredibly helpful! Thank you, Aunt Shelli!!
Mom does get tired with increased activity, and frequently lays down for a nap in the afternoon. This isn’t uncommon as her body is still healing. It’s going to take time to build her endurance level back up again. Her trauma surgeon told Ladd & I (when mom was in ICU) that it would take a good year for mom to be "whole" again. She’s healing a lot faster than originally expected, so that’s a huge answer to prayer!!
She has been doing some supervised driving  over the past month now. Ladd took her out while in MT for Christmas, and the neighbors (Sandy & Kelly) have gone with her as well. She should be independent with driving within the next month or so! In the mean time, we want to thank those who have so generously given their time to drive mom back and forth to appointments, church, the store, etc. We truly appreciate each and every one of you!! And thank you all so much for the prayers, love, and support! It means the world to us!!
