Missie was diagnosed with autoimmune liver disease almost 10 years ago. The majority of this time she has been relatively healthy, focusing on work, doing things that she enjoys such as traveling and camping, and spending time with the people she loves most, family and friends, all of you. Over the last couple of years we realized that is was time to start preparing for a liver transplant. Missie's health challenges increased along with the complications of having chronic disease. She has spent the last few months in and out of the hospital, each admission more serious and longer than the next, each complication scarier than the last. The goal is still a new liver, but we're learning just how difficult that goal is to navigate, especially when someone is critically ill.
If you know Missie you will know that she is so kind, brave, persistent, and stubborn. With that, she is also incredibly private and does not want people to think that she is weak or take pity on her. I know that just by saying these words, I risk being in deep shit with my mother and I welcome the opportunity to rumble with her should I get the chance when she is well.
I'm taking this risk because I believe in the power of community, the power of love, and the power of prayer. I believe that the more people that can lift Missie up in their thoughts and prayers and can manifest the outcomes that she desperately needs that she will have a greater chance. She is climbing an incredible mountain, she is almost at the top, and she is tired - so very tired. She needs people on the sidelines, cheering her on, pushing her forward....10 more steps, you're almost there, you can do hard things.
I know that at the end of this journey she will look back and see support, love, and encouragement and know she was never alone.
As her family of advocates, we are feeling the emotional drain of trying to update as many as possible while running the risk of miscommunicating or leaving someone out. This is our attempt to try to keep people updated while also collecting encouragement and hope from the people that know Missie best. Her journey is far from over, and she's promised a grand celebration once she's recovered from her climb.
I’m saddened to report that Missie took a turn last night and will not be with us very much longer. She is resting comfortably surrounded by loved ones in the hospital. The doctors say that it could be 24 to 48 hours until she passes. Please pray for comfort during this difficult time.
