Journal entry by Mike and Maggie Skaggs

Today Mike began Physical and Occupational at Livingston HealthCare. Kyla is his occupational therapist and Holly is his physical therapist they both seem wonderful.

They definitely knows their stuff, are professional, explain not only in therapeutic terms but also relate to real life. Both therapists emphasized that the First 3 months post stroke is when there is the greatest chance to regain abilities.

His stroke can affect temperature management system - this IS still occurring in Mike’s forearms and hands. At night especially he is chilled even with blankets/big comforters.

He has good range of motion however he has a slight weakness on his right side in relation to upper extremity strength (shoulders, elbows and grip).

He did a fatigue self exam and noted with additional stimulation (kids/life/home) he tires easily which is expected and common. He rated himself at 40% recovered on a scale of 0-100%.

In OT he will work on fine motor skills, grip strength, upper extremities and fatigue recovery.

In Physical Therapy Holly determined his Vestibular Ocular Reflex needs improvement and he has mild vestibular impairments likely causing his imbalance. This will be their primary focus along with strength recovery.

Homework:

Create LOG to notate his Mood/activity/feeling

He has OT homework that he can do with Sawyer and PT to begin working on the vestibular limitations.

Words of Wisdom: Due to his age he has a good outlook of recovery.

He needs to Be Patient as Rome was not built in a day.

Scheduling: PT/OT back to back seems good

He will continue 2x per week for 6 weeks and will re-evaluate then.

We look forward to our next PT/OT appointments as well as his appointment with Dr. Coleman.
