Mike’s Story

Site created on June 1, 2019

This is my sweet husband of 30 years. He is a retired firefighter and avid fisherman. He loves his family and friends well, but not as much as he loves his savior Jesus Christ. He has been battling small cell carcinoma with metastatic disease for 8 months now, but we are continuing to trust our Lord in all things. Thank you for visiting this site, for your prayers, and your support. We are so grateful for family and friends who are loving us well through this difficult time.

So back in October of 2018, we learned that Mike had a tumor and that it was malignant.  After having the tumor removed here at United Regional, we were sent to UT Southwestern Medical Center because the cancer was not contained.  UT told us to get an Oncologist here in Wichita Falls, and that they would work with our doctors. This led us to Texas Oncology and Dr. Challagalla.  What an amazing group of people! The doctors and nursing staff at TX Oncology are definitely some of the best! After 3 rounds of chemotherapy and several rounds of radiation, we were encouraged to contact MD Anderson because the cancer continued to progress.  At the beginning of April, we had our first visit at MD Anderson. We were told that the chemotherapy treatments needed to stop because Mike’s kidneys were not handling it well and needed time to heal before any additional treatment was given. So the 5th and last round of chemotherapy Mike had was at the end of March. The doctor also said that genetic testing would be done on the tumors to hopefully find a clinical trial that would best address his needs.  So, as of May 20, our 30th anniversary, Mike began a clinical trial that will hopefully make a difference. It combines immunotherapy with another drug that will combat the cancer cells at the genetic level in order to keep the cells from reproducing. We have high hopes for this treatment, but more than that we know that Mike’s life is securely in the hands or our loving Savior. We know that He knows everything that is going to happen, and that He is a good, good Father who will be with us every step of the way.  We are so very thankful for your prayers and support. God is loving us well through all of you! Thank you for being the hands and feet of Jesus in our life! May God richly bless you and your families for the love and support you have shown to us!
