Journal

This will be my last update.  Mike passed away this evening. I am at loss for words tonight.  The heartbreak we all feel is overwhelming.  He touched so many people with his good nature, sense of humor, and adventurous spirit and they have all reached out to us from far away places.  His network was expansive.  There are few like him.  How many people do you know who had a working covered wagon parked in the driveway?  He loved to read, cook, fish, and crab.  He loved his trips out west to herd and brand cattle and spend time with his friends in Wyoming.  Mike retired to become a real cowboy even if only for a few weeks each summer.  But most of all, Mike loved being with his family.

Mike and I only knew each other for 3 weeks before we decided to get married.  In the 6 months that it took to plan a wedding, I am sure my mother thought I would come to my senses...a bartender/waiter?!  That was over 46 years ago.  In those 46 years, we lived the richer or poorer, for better or worse, and in sickness and in health.  And now in death we do part. I know that Mike will be with us each day, guiding us and watching over us.  Of that I am most assured...he promised!

Mike's nickname, given to him by his friend, Dan, was Spike.  We will be getting the dog that Mike planned to get when he finished chemo.  The dog's name will be Spike.  I look forward to finding the perfect dog...one that does not have accidents in the house, does not bark or shed, is good with children, and walks on a leash!

I am sad to be ending the journal on Caring Bridge because it means I am starting a new life without Mike beside me.  I thank God for putting our lives in order this year.  He knew what we were going to need and He provided.

For my love...

               I'm Free

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free
I'm following the path
God has laid you see.
I took his hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, or work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way
I've now found peace
At the end of the day.

Peace and Love to those who followed Mike's journey
