Mikayla’s Story

Site created on October 19, 2018

In February 2018, Mikayla began experiencing episodes of dizziness, lethargy, nausea, and vomiting.   After an ER visit and CT scan, doctors discovered a tumor in Mikayla's brain.  She was immediately admitted to Cohen's Children Hospital in Queens, NY where she underwent two surgeries to resect an orange sized tumor in her right ventricle.  The pathology report determined the mass to be a Choroid Plexus Papilloma.  Mikayla started physical therapy and slowly recovered, regaining her mobility and health.  Shortly after the surgeries, the DeCiccos experienced two other life changing events with the birth of Mikayla's sister, Gracie as well as the family relocation to Miami, Florida for a new job opportunity.   Mikayla was seen for follow up appointments and routine MRIs at Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami.  In September, 7 months after her first surgery, Mikayla began experiencing headaches again.  A subsequent MRI revealed a new tumor growth, and Mikayla underwent her third brain surgery to resect the mass.  Pathology for the second mass concluded a Choroid Plexus Carcinoma, a very rare brain cancer, with approximately 200 cases in the US.  Because of the proximity to family,  Mary and Michael decided to pursue treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC.   Mikayla will start chemotherapy on Monday, October 22.

Mikayla will undergo chemotherapy for the next 5-6 months.  During this time, Michael will remain in Miami for work and commute to NY as able.  During treatment weeks, Mikayla and Mary will stay at the Ronald McDonald house located near Memorial Sloan Kettering and Gracie will be cared for by family.   In between treatments, Mary and the girls will stay with family in NY.

We ask that you join us in praying for Mikayla as she begins her fight against Choroid Plexus Carcinoma.  Please pray for no rise of her intracranial pressure, for her to stay illness-free during the upcoming flu season, and for Mary, Mikayla and Gracie to all find a new rhythm and routine during their stay in NY.

We will continue to update this site in order to keep family, friends, and loved ones abreast of Mikayla's condition and to pass along specific prayer needs for the DeCicco family.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Mary DeCicco

Hi Friends and Family,

I am happy to share that Mikayla finished her last cycle of treatment on March 15th. That Friday could not have come any sooner:) Mikayla was so happy and proud of herself. She celebrated in the playroom with staff and nurses.

She has been feeling nauseous and sleepy, but remains in good spirits, excited to go back to Florida. Mikayla will have a spine and skull MRI on April 2nd. We are praying that all goes well. If the scan looks good, then her port will be removed on the 10th. After that, we hope to fly home on the 15th.

Mikayla will continue to have scans every three months for the first two years and then every six months.

She is very excited to go home and to be back in the nice weather. She misses her toys and bedroom.

We celebrated Mikayla’s third birthday and Gracie’s first birthday at the aquarium in Philadelphia. They had lots of fun with their cousins. Gracie has learned to walk since then. She is so lively and loves to do everything that Mikayla does.

I hope to keep you posted soon.

Much love,
The DeCicco Family
