Michael’s Story

Site created on December 28, 2018

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

As most of you know, Mike was diagnosed with Nasopharyngeal (nay-zoh-fuh-RIN-jee-ul) carcinoma in November 2018.  This is a cancer that occurs in the nasopharynx, which is located behind your nose and above the back of your throat. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is rare in the United States and only 3 other cases have been reported to date.  Mike is in stage 4 of this cancer and was given a life expectancy of 3 months.  He is currently at home with his wife, Becky Sather, resting and trying to stay comfortable.  Hospice care is coming into the home to help and he is spending his remaining time enjoying friends and family.  I would invite all of you to share a story you remember about Mike so he can read and hear from those who may not have the opportunity to visit him.  We will update this site as new information is available.

Journal entry by Lizzie Enstad

Hello everyone.  This morning Mike was moved to the VA Hospital where he will spend the remainder of his time.  He is having difficulties breathing and swallowing so the nursing staff that was caring for him in the house thought it would be best for him to have 24 hour care at this point in his illness.  He is in room 290 at the VA hospital in Sioux Falls, SD if you would like to visit or send a well wish.  His birthday is February 27 so feel free to leave a birthday wish on this site or text him at 605-366-6573.  Thank you for your continued support and love.
