Journal entry by Michael Patrick-Papa

Please excuse this lengthy text message.  It’s the only way I can think of to pass along some personal info about my state of health, and ensure (hopefully) that everyone gets the same message at the same time.

The afternoon of August 6th 2019, one minute everything was moving along as best as it could be, and then my oncologist dropped the bomb that my cancer had come back with a vengeance.  In ten short minutes in her exam room, my life had changed dramatically again.

I was told, even though I was already aware, metastatic(terminal stage 4) colorectal cancer (which I was diagnosed with in December of 2016 which was metastasis to my liver) is the 2nd leading cause of death in men with the disease, it now makes it even more difficult to grasp.

With having a diagnosis of "metastatic", that means, the original tumor in my colon is alive and apparently working overtime by mass producing cells and now has found several locations in my lymph nodes.  When it gets in the LN’s, it goes virtually everywhere.  That is my situation.

Now, my options are chemo therapy AGAIN...alternative medication or nothing at all.  Surgery or radiation is not an option due to the metastasis I have.  That being..... Adenocarcinoma.  This is the additional type of cancer that has formed in my mucus-secreting gland cells, which is found deep in the tissues that line my internal organs.  The outlook is not good.  To sum it up, I am struggling with this and have no idea how I will proceed at this point.  However, I’ll keep you all updated.  I love you all!
