Michael’s Story

Site created on June 25, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. Michael and I created this so that we can easily communicate with everyone regarding Michael's progress in his fight against stage 3 rectal cancer. He was diagnosed on June 10th--yes, on Lazlo's 6th birthday-- and the last two weeks have been a lot of nervous waiting and tests. The good news is that his cancer is curable and has not spread to other organs. Nevertheless, we have several months of chemo, chemo w/radiation, and surgery ahead.  We want to thank so many of you who have already given us so much support and love.

As many of you know, Michael is a stay at home dad with Lazlo (6 years) and Harrison (19 1/2 years) who both have autism and need high touch care.  During this next year we are going to need assistance. How much and when, will be clearer in the next few weeks.  Again, thank you all for you concern and love. We'll be in touch soon.  Please feel free to share this site with those you feel would like to know.

Journal entry by Michael Escamilla

A year and a week since his initial diagnosis. Time is strange. On Lazlo’s Bday this year instead of a diagnosis Michael had his port removed. A short surgery, but one step closer to getting whole.

On Monday, Michael will have his stoma reversal surgery. This is such a relief as he’s had many complications with the stoma and has struggled with the refined foods diet that’s often recommended. He has been able to do some exercise here and there including some hikes and a little skateboarding down the coastal trail. He’ll be in the hospital for 3-7 days. This is a little nutty as it is finals week/graduation followed by  the start of a new quarter for me. But I’m feeling pretty confident that with a sense of humor we can manage.

Thank you all for keeping up with us. Fingers crossed the next post will be our last as his cancer journey will move into the monitoring phase.

Be well,

Kimberly
