He was a good friend. My early elementary years growing up at Red Bird Mission were better because of Michael and his friendship. And we were riding our bicycles everywhere then... when we were ages 6-9. I recall the day I stepped off the bus from 1st grade and Michael ran up to the bus stop and told me that I now had 5 dogs! I didn't believe him as we only had 1 stray that we had kind of adopted. However, my family had gone on some day trip shopping (it was a considerable distance) and noticed a mother dog and her pups abandoned to be killed by coal trucks on a blind curve in the mountains. Apparently my parents told my younger brother that if the dogs were still there on the way back that they would stop. Against all odds the dogs were all still alive, huddled in a ditch on the curve and my parents loaded them all in the car and brought them home! We kept the mother dog and one pup and I think Micheal got one and the others went to neighbors. Those dogs kept away many a rattle snake and water moccasin in our younger years in the Appalachian mountains and the river behind our houses!
