Journal entry by shelley stout —
My brother often regaled Shelley and I -- along with our sons Vincent and Anthony -- with stories of his past. I thought it would be appropriate to start with one of them. We visited Marty and Peg in Maine every summer and the boys loved listening to Marty tell them stories around the dining room table after dinner. Their favorite involved a rocket, and empty field, and an improvised "fire extinguisher." In Marty's retelling, he and his friends went to an empty field to shoot off a homemade rocket. I believe they were all in grade school at the time and clearly had no idea what was going to happen when the rocket was ignited. Apparently, they lit it and it took off ACROSS the ground and one of his friend was in its path. I forgot the kid's name, but someone will remember that -- Billy? Anyway, his pants apparently caught on fire and he was rolling on the ground trying to put it out when the other boys realized that this was not working. So...they decided to all urinate on his legs to put out the fire! Apparently that worked -- at least that is how I remember that particular story.
