Matthew’s Story

Site created on November 26, 2018

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

As many of you know, on November 7, 2018, 2 days before his 29th birthday, Matt received a call that no one wants to receive: he had blood cancer and he needed to go the Emergency Room immediately.

In the weeks leading up to the call, Matt had noticed his energy level had dropped and that he was bruising more easily. He finally decided to visit a doctor when he noticed a rash developing on his legs. At his appointment, his doctor was concerned enough with his symptoms to send him to the hospital the same day for bloodwork. Less than 4 hours after completing bloodwork, he received the call, dropped everything and rushed to the hospital. Around 4AM on November 8, Matt was admitted to Wilmot Cancer Center where he underwent extensive testing to determine a diagnosis. He received his first round of Chemotherapy on his 29th birthday, November 9th.

On November 13th, Matt’s diagnosis was confirmed: He has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B-Cell), an extremely rare diagnosis for his age. He is currently at Wilmot Cancer Center undergoing intensive 29-day inpatient chemotherapy treatment. Over the next 3.5 years he faces multiple rounds of chemotherapy, blood and platelet transfusions, bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures, testing, and a possible bone marrow transplant down the road.

Matt and his family are thankful for the incredible team at Wilmot Cancer Center for their expertise and for providing Matt with an unparalleled level of care as he fights this.

Matt would especially like to thank his incredible family and friends for the outpouring of love and support he continues to receive. He could not get through this with without you and truly appreciates every single one of you for your kindness.

Journal entry by Jenna Turetsky

Happy Friday everyone! We had Matt's weekly appointment this afternoon, and we were thrilled to hear his numbers are looking fantastic! Even his liver levels are back within normal range!

Today, we discussed Matt's next round of treatment and found out which group Matt is in for the clinical trial. As it turns out, Matt was randomized into the group that will not be receiving the trial drug. Instead, his group will continue on with the standard course of treatment with the advantage of having a team of the top leukemia doctors from across the country on his "team." While we had hoped he may benefit from the trial drug, we are comforted to know that the standard treatment has great success rates.

Treatment over the next few months will include two four-week long rounds of chemo. This will include infusion chemo as well as a weekly spinal tap (IT) chemo, and transfusions, as Matt's blood counts will drop back down during treatment. We will be driving to Wilmot Cancer Center 4 days a week during this time for outpatient visits to the infusion center, as well as our standard weekly visit with Matt's doctor.

It will be a busy few months for us (with lots of miles on our car), but we are thankful to have such an incredible team of doctors supporting Matt. Everyone at Wilmot has made us feel so comfortable and optimistic for the future.

We were encouraged to get out and do something fun this weekend before Matt starts treatment again. If you have any suggestions on fun things to do, let us know in the comments! 👇
