Mary’s Story

Site created on November 21, 2019

Hello All,
My mom suffered a moderate stroke while sleeping and woke Wednesday morning, November 6th having lost mobility and vision on her right side. The right side of her mouth was slack and she could not swallow well. She was unable to recall people and dates and was quite confused.  It was very difficult to lose 60% of her overnight.

However, that was 2 weeks ago. She has been receiving acute rehab at Marionjoy’s residential home since the 9th. Her progress has been positive. She can now swallow, speak and is more lucid and aware. Her right arm remains paralyzed but her right leg is slowly gaining strength. We are hopeful that, with a cane, she might be able to walk again.
Visitors are welcome during her lunchtime (1-2pm). She is in room #1170.

My mom will be at Marionjoy till Dec. 3rd. Her therapeutic team is trying to get the insurance to cover an additional 10 days so she can continue intensive therapy. Stay tuned. Thank you all for the cards, visits, flowers, meals, prayers and good thoughts. We are all so grateful! We will keep you posted.

Journal entry by Deanna Pacelli

Hello Good People,
I apologize for not posting in a while. I realize that the current state of our country has impacted everyone to varying degrees. I hope this finds you all (and your loved ones) healthy and safe.
This will likely be my final journal entry. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your love, support, hugs, flowers, meals, words of encouragement and prayers over the last few months. Mom is now able to communicate on her own via her phone. So, please do give her (and my Dad) a call or Facetime them to stay connected! We can all benefit from more social interaction right now.
Mom continues to get treatment three times a week which consists of speech, occupational and physical therapies. She responds well to these interventions and is making great physical progress. They have, of course, put this on hold for month while we shelter-in-place.
While she still needs someone with her and by her side, she gained some independence as of late. I was on Facetime with her the other day and she got up from her chair and walked (with her cane and leg brace) to the bathroom by herself! I was so excited for her. My Dad is being a dutiful caregiver and learning how to cook for them. All in all, they've adjusted to this new normal. Doctors are hopeful that mom will regain more movement in her right hand and arm. As it is, she can move her fingers a bit, lift her right arm and flex her wrist. She's getting there!
Thank you again for reading these posts and caring about our family. It truly energized us when things where tough. I wish you all the same wonderful support you have given us.

Be well and happy,
Deanna
