Mary Beth’s Story

Site created on April 25, 2019

Thank you for sharing my journey of evicting Hermann, the parasitic cancer in my breast.  My goals: 1.  become completely physically healthy; 2. maintain  a strong mental health, including an irreverent sense of humor; and  3. learn to ask for help from family and friends!   Thanks for joining me on this roller coaster!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Mary Beth Grant

It has been 10 months since I sent a message, and this will be my last!  Here is the really brief summary:

- I continued to hate the last round of chemo until I was finished with it June 8.  I am glad I did it so I would know I did my part in trying to beat Hermann, but DANG!  I hated that!

- I have continued to get stronger and feel better!  I don't mind that my breasts are lopsided, or, as one medical professional said "misshapen" (come on, really?!) because all the bad parts are gone, so to me they are GORGEOUS!!

- I had a scare in May because the scar tissue felt exactly like Hermann to me!  So, I did mamagrams and ultra sounds, and then a follow-up with the surgeon in September, and everything is GREAT!  It is, as we talk about other things, the new normal.

- The post-cancer counting is based on the surgery, so as of Sept 19 I was 1 year cancer free!  I know, of course, it could come back, but it is now officially in my rear view mirror.  I look forward to when I can say it has been 5 years -- or 20 years -- but I will be patient!  For now, I will work on my general health: better eating and exercise habits, mindfulness exercises, and getting enough sleep.   And, I will practice gratitude. I will remain ever grateful for the love and support I received during this process.  Dang, I am blessed.

TTFN!!
