Mary’s Story

Site created on February 23, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Mary was admitted to Methodist West on February 12th, 2020 with diverticulitis and a perforated bowel. She received treatments that were helping, however she progressively got worse and on Wednesday, February 19th, 2020 they did another CT scan and found a large hole in her bowels. At this point she was leaking poison into her abdomen which led to septic shock/sepsis. She was taken by ambulance to Methodist downtown where she underwent emergency surgery. During surgery it was discovered things were far worse than they had anticipated and she left surgery on life support. Mary is currently in the Critical Care Unit at Methodist receiving the best care she can. Frank and her girls love her very much and are asking for all the thoughts and prayers. Mary is a fighter, she has proven this within the last few years when she joined Farrells and kicked butt. Please read below for continued updates.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Cara Ford

Happy Friday! We wanted to give an update on mama koala's progress these last two weeks....

Mom is making great growth! This week she was able to walk with the assistance of the rails in the therapy room in addition to being able to walk with a walker. Mom is able to walk a few feet at a time and she does it several times during a session. She is determined to get home ASAP. Her motivation has helped her appetite and she recently started eating almost 100% of her meals... if she continues on this path then they will be able to remove her feeding tube soon! Mom's nurses were also able to get her outside this week to enjoy some fresh air which we know she has been missing the last few months. We have been able to visit with phone conversations, text messages, FaceTime, and even a few trips to Omaha to visit through the window.

The next steps....
As you can imagine, things change often. Currently the plan is to:
1. Continue to build mom's strength through physical therapy and nourishment
2. CT scan tentatively scheduled for May 1st to check the status of her current abdominal abscess
3. Based on the results from the CT- possible skin graft or surgical intervention to her abdominal wound
4. Recovery
5. Intensive therapy at Madonna for a few weeks
6. ***Possibly*** transition home?!?!? :)
These steps are all very tentative and can easily change but we are hopeful.

Mom is beyond thankful and grateful (we all are) for the love and support she has received from friends, family, and strangers. These last few months have been unreal for our family but with the love and support from each other and you all, we have made it through the worst of it- thank you!
