Mary Ann’s Story

Site created on July 7, 2021

As many of you may know, in April of 2017, I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer which resulted in surgeries, radiation, and an extended period of chemotherapy at Community Hospital North Cancer Center.

In May of this year, I began participation in a clinical trial of a new cancer drug at Horizon Oncology in Lafayette, Indiana.  Since then, I have been making frequent visits to Lafayette, and going through a battery of tests to see if the study drug was helping to slow the growth of my cancer.  Today I was given the results of the latest scans, and was told that the the cancer has continued to spread, and the study drug had not been effective.

As a result, I have discussed 3 possible options for the future with my doctor: 1) Enroll in another clinical trial, 2) Try another chemotherapy drug which doesn’t have a strong reputation for success, and 3) Spending the time I have being comfortable and focusing on the quality of my days.  After prayerfully considering everything I have already been through, I have chosen the 3rd option, and am at peace with my decision.

I am so grateful for your thoughts and prayers.  Be assured that I have felt your support through these challenging months.

With love,
Mary Ann

Journal entry by Paul Brown

This morning I took a  walk through Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park, a beautiful setting where we have walked many times over the years. I could feel her presence as I retraced our steps along the trail.
