Marvin’s Story

Site created on December 22, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Marvin is hospitalized at Altru Medical in Grand Forks, North Dakota. This is his third hospitalization in three months.  His first hospitalization in October was as a result of a subdural hematoma that needed to be drained. During that time, he also contracted COVID with minimal symptoms. He was hospitalized again in November after a fall and the need to evaluate his subdural hematoma once again; thankfully, this time, no surgery was required. At the time of discharge, he went to Lutheran Sunset Home for continued convalesence and rehab. He returned to Altru again this month due to complications from COVID. He developed blood clots in his lungs as a result of the COVID, which led to a bacterial pneumonia and then subsequent sepsis. He remains in serious condition at Altru, where he is receiving top notch medical care. We will continue to update this site with more information as it becomes available.

Journal entry by Scott Mielke

After consulting with the palliative care team, we decided to change Marvin's care status to palliative, which is essentially hospice care to keep him comfortable. He continues to receive oxygen to help with comfort. He is receiving medications that keep his breathing at a comfortable level. Depending on how things go over night, he may be transferred back to the nursing home in Grafton for continued hospice care. Thank you, everyone, for your continued thoughts and prayers for the most benevolent outcome.
