Newest Update

Journal entry by Tricia Griswold

Happy Thanksgiving to all,  I sure hope you all were able to enjoy at least some of your family. This is a much different year for everyone. I wanted to reach out and tell you all how truly grateful we are for each and everyone of you. If you are reading this you have played some role in our lives or have just said a prayer Mark. We are beyond grateful. I know it has been awhile and I know I promised more updates. I am going to do my best to catch you all up.

Since my last post Mark has been through so much. After getting out of the VA hospital he then headed back to treatment.  All was going good and we had a lot of positive feedback from the test results. Mark is quite the trooper.  He takes approximately 40 pills a day.  They are a mix different supplement's and some medications. He takes them throughout the day and never complains. Mark has been experiencing some problems with his lung.  He has struggled to keep fluid from building in it. He has had to have them drained 3-4 times. So, I am going to fast forward a little bit to a couple weeks ago. Mark was scheduled for a PET scan to see how everything was coming along and so that the wonderful Oncologist that I told you about could plan his attack with radiation.  Well, the day before that was to happen Mark was in treatment and his heart started to race. Envita was doing all they could to get it under control. Mark called me to come pick him up. He said treatment wasn't going good. " I have to go to the hospital" I got to my car as fast as I could. We started making our way to the VA when our wonderful patient coordinator called to tell me that they called ahead to the VA and that is when they said they couldn't help. So took the first left and headed to the hospital nearest to our condo ( which Envita happened to recommend anyway). I drove as fast as I could... scared the whole way and praying none stop. Mark kept insisting that he was going to be fine. By the time we got to the ER they were waiting for him. Envita really makes sure their patients are taken care of.  The hospitals are all full due to COVID. Unfortunately they couldnt get a room for Mark until the next day.  Mark ended up being in the hospital for 6 nights. It broke my heart. But, he was comfortable and in good hands. I hated that I could only see him a few hours a day.  But, it was better then nothing. Mark called me Sunday late morning and told me that the Oncologist that is doing his radiation stopped up to see him. I was so ecstatic!! He told Mark we needed to get him out of the hospital and get that PET scan done so he could get to work. He is really hopeful he can help. Then  the hospital called me late Sunday and said that he was good to go. I froze! I had to find a place for him to stay since we are on the second story and he was not to strain himself. I found a hotel right across the street from the hospital in case something were to happen.  From there I contacted our management here. There is a unit right below us that is vacant. I thought I would take a chance and see if we could use it for awhile until I figured out something else. The manager emailed me right back and said of course we could use it. I was so grateful. It was hard running back and forth.  We had him home " thank you Lord" I then scheduled his PET scan.  He needs it really bad to be able to get the much needed radiation. So Mark had that done this week Tuesday.  He was still so tired and weak from the week in the hospital, but he went. The Oncologist wanted to see the results ASAP. they gave me a CD. I took Mark home got him comfortable and fed and I took off to get the CD to the Dr.  right away. Then Wednesday (yesterday) he was scheduled for a blood transfusion.  This was supposed to help him in many ways, breathing, heart, energy! We talked the night before about how excited we both were. Then we got to the transfusion all was going good. He was about 3/4 the way through the first bag and he started not to feel well. They took him to the ER where they then found he has double pneumonia. OH MY GOSH!!! What more can he take!!! I talked to him around 10:30 last night and he said he was still in the ER. I asked him if he ate and he said no. I got some dinner together for him and ran it over to him. This is a different hospital then the last one. They kept in the emergency room again until the next day because there are no rooms available. Stupid COVID!! So to conclude this entry. I talked to Mark today he sounded tired, but he said he is feeling better. They think they will have him through tomorrow. The lead nurse said they won't hold him more then necessary because of COVID. In the mean time I talked to the Dr. yesterday and made sure  to line up a plan for Mark once he is out. I don't want anymore time to pass without him getting the radiation that will do him so much good. Envita has a new plan for him to stay the course of treatment. And, I pray so hard that this is the last bump in the road before he starts to feel better.  We missed him terribly today.  I have prayed all day. I will keep you all posted. I once again want to say how thankful we are for all of you. Happy Thanksgiving to you all.
