Maggie’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Here is a brief summary of where things are today and what has transpired. After a routine cola guard home test that came back positive she needed a colonoscopy. It came back positive for colon cancer hence the resection surgery ( removal of a foot and half of colon ). The post surgery biopsy revealed cancer in the lymph system which in itself put her in a stage 3 status and it showed clean images in other organs. Another Scan was done 2 weeks post surgery and revealed 10 spots on the liver that were not there prior. Red flags went up quickly as she went from Stage 3 to Stage 4 😞.
She has met with an oncologist here and will go to Duke next week for another opinion. It appears that treatment for this type of cancer is very standard. There are many drugs that have proven to be successful at managing the cancer. Chemo twice a month for six months. Then more scans. Sadly there appears currently to be no cure so to speak but things change quickly in the cancer world. Chemo won’t start for a few weeks while still healing from surgery. She has always taken great care of herself which should play a major role in her ability to tolerate the treatments. We pray and we’re hopeful that these treatments will add many more years. We won’t go into details of statistics re life expectancy as we’re all marching towards the same place not knowing where we are in line.

We will continue to research, stay strong, positive and optimistic that things go well.

Needless to say no one saw this coming…
