Journal entry by Shonna Wassenaar

4 weeks ago today...

There are many ways to finish that sentence.  Here are just a few:

...God was in control. God is still in control.   I wouldn't want it any other way!

....we were waiting for Macy to come out of trauma surgery, not knowing how she'd come out.  Thankful for her story to continue.

...the future is unclear, but that isn't something to be afraid of, but exciting to know that we are in God's hands and his plans are perfect.  If you have a pulse, you have a purpose!

...could've looked so much different if Macy and Layne weren't helped out of a smoking vehicle by an innocent witness,

...The Great Physician guided the doctors to take care of Macy and Layne.

...we were faced with phrases like "50% chance of survival", "brain damage is likely", "head trauma can lead to seizures and stroke", "coma and breathing tube will reduce brain stress and swelling"

...seems like way longer than 4 weeks especially if you've witnessed the amazing healing and recovery.

We CELEBRATE this day as a milestone!  Macy was able to go to school today and visit her workplace.  It was a big day in so many ways.

We came to a point last week as parents to push her back to normal.  To take a giant leap to get out and surround herself by her teachers and classmates. If it was up to her she would have chosen to finish her senior year on the couch but we just knew that was actually starting to hold her back in her recovery.   Not sure what next week will hold for her and we may need to take a step back but we are pointed in the right direction.

She still deals with concussion symptoms and headaches every now and then but it has become less and less.  Today, she was allowed 50% weight-bearing on her left ankle with crutches or walker.  And she'll have xrays in 2 weeks to determine how much longer she'll  be in a boot.  2 more weeks to go until her final head CT which will hopefully clear her to be able to drive. Just amazing!

Please keep us in your prayers as we continue to navigate the road to recovery. There is no time-line nor a manual for this. And I know there will be days of frustration.  I  also know there will be days of self consciousness and impatience. Pray for a positive attitude and motivation to get caught up and find her "normal" and that we, as her family, will be supportive and encouraging. Help us to be forever grateful for watch her continue her story on earth.  Praying God will give Macy the courage for Macy to be His witness and proclaim His goodness, love, and care for all of us.

"Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever." Ephesians 3:20-21
