Luke’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your visit here and if you can continue to keep Luke in your prayers that would mean the world to us.

Let's start with sharing the incredible man that Luke is. Everyone that knows Luke knows how incredibly positive, encouraging, fun-loving and wonderful he is. I could go on forever. Luke is an amazing dad to our kids - Hollie (8), Mia (6) and Jordan (16 months). His passion for uplifting others and having a positive impact at school and camp during the summer is inspiring. How can one guy have so much energy and zest for life? Seriously. Luke can.

On January 11, Luke was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. As you can imagine, this news was absolutely devastating and shocking for our family. This all began on December 17  when Luke had some pain in his stomach that landed him in the ER.  We figured it was a gallbladder issue. We waited 8 hours to see a doctor that evening. In fact, we almost left because of the length of time we had waited and worry of catching Covid. The ER doctor determined that it was not his gallbladder and we were puzzled. Through doing an ultrasound to check his gallbladder, they happened to find a spot on Luke's liver. At the time we were told it was most likely nothing and to follow up with our primary care doc when we can. We left the ER and the pain went away! He felt fine and we had a wonderful Christmas.  On January 5th Luke had a MRI to look at his liver. The next day Luke got the dreaded call that no one wants to receive. They asked him to come in to discuss his results as soon as possible. Unfortunately they found many lesions on Luke's liver.  After numerous appointments, biopsies and tests the next few days, it was confirmed that Luke has colon cancer that has spread to his liver. The doctor's informed us that Luke has a really tough battle to fight but we are ready to fight it.  With little to no symptoms thus far,  we have faith that his young age and health have set him up to continue to fight through this storm he's faced with. Luke is starting chemo this week already and boy are we ready to start attacking this head on. If you know him, you know that his outlook and strength are just one of many things on his side!

We are incredibly blessed that our girls now attend the school where Luke teaches. They absolutely love being at school with their daddy.  As you can imagine, we want to keep things as normal as possible for our kids. They are going to be surrounded by so much love and we couldn't feel more thankful for all of the teachers that are part of our tribe of supporters.  Our family, friends from all over, doctors, and team of teachers at work are all of the "helpers" that we told the girls about (while Jordan ran around playing with his golf club)! Man, we are lucky to have everyone that we do. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for every prayer that you can send to Luke and our family during this very difficult time.

This will be our way to communicate so we will update this as much as possible.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Luke Miller

Hello everybody, I know it has been a few months since we sent an update. A few weeks ago (March 6th and 7th) I was having severe pain in my side and was short of breath.  We were supposed to leave for Arizona for Spring Break that night after work. Long story short....with the help of Sarah and my work friend, Julie,  I got right in for a CT Scan that afternoon. The scan revealed a massive blood clot in my lung, which my doctor here in Houston compared it to a heart attack in my lung and showed us a small part of my lung that died as a result. That being said, I did not go to Arizona as it could have been fatal if I were to fly. Sarah and the girls still went while Jordan and I stayed at my parents. I'm doing much better and the clot is getting better now that I've been on blood thinners for a few weeks. So thankful we caught it when we did!

I had appointments and scans this week in Houston.  My  scans are clear (yay!) and we are waiting for the CTDNA blood test to come back, it can take 7-10 days or so. That test was still positive back in January after surgery so I went back on chemo this winter. I've done 4 more rounds since my surgery (26 rounds total) and it has not been fun as the nausea and skin side effects are taking a toll on me. After talking with my liver and stomach surgeons and my oncologist,  they suggested a break from chemo for the next 2 months! There were a few areas noted on my scan report but nothing remarkable. They said that chemo isn't going to keep the cancer away based on my track record the last 2 years but will hopefully prolong the time between reoccurrences .They shared that taking a break now will allow my body and mind to recover and also keeps my body from building up a tolerance/resistance to the treatments. We met with Dr. White (he did my HIPEC and cytoreductive surgery in December) for my last appointment this morning and he gave us so much hope. He was thrilled about my scan results. He was very happy that the scan was clean and said to enjoy the next few months off from chemo and get back to being active again. This is such a relief to hear and exactly what we were hoping for. It is hard to accept good news for some reason but we are welcoming a time to be normal again!

I will come back to Houston in June for a scan and bloodwork and we will determine future treatments from there. This is great news as it will allow our family to return to normal with no more interruptions for 2 months.

Thank you for the continued support!
