Lowell’s Story

Site created on April 28, 2020

On April 26th, Lowell somehow fell coming out of a loader.  He landed on his lower back.  Initially he thought it was just shock from the fall but it quickly became apparent it was more serious.  The ambulance took him to Queen of Peace in New Prague where a CAT scan showed a burst L1 vertebrae. There is no damage to the spinal cord, but one piece of bone was 6 mm into the spinal column. From there he was moved to Mayo Clinic in Rochester where in addition to the fractured vertebrae a MRI found compressed nerves on his spine.

To make things more difficult, the arrival of COVID19 has kept the hospitals on lockdown so none of us, even Marsha, have been able to see him since the accident and won't until he his discharged.  We can text with him and call him, but it seems so unfair he has to be in the hospital alone.

Journal entry by Katie Tangen

I talked to dad today and hes in the best spirits he's been in a long time.  He said this morning he told his therapist he'd talked to a lot of people, customers, friends and family and what he really wanted was to sit by an open window and get fresh air and hear birds.  After that he walked a time and a half around the gym with his walker, not stopping, and the therapist was so impressed, she wheeled him outside for awhile.  He said 40 degrees in a t shirt never felt so good!!!

Everyone's messages and phone calls have really meant a lot to him, I dont think he expected much attention.  Its really meant a lot and I think its giving him so much motivation.  Thank you.
