Logan’s Story

Site created on April 22, 2018

Logan was in a tragic four wheeler accident on Sunday, April  22nd at 5:30 pm and was airlifted to Children’s Hospital of Minneapolis. Details are unknown to what exactly happened but he is currently in the ICU at Children’s. He has fractured clavicle, ribs, and sternum. There is some serious concern about his right lung. Both lungs currently have tubes in them. There is air under his diaphram. The doctor said he will get sicker before he gets better. He is not breathing on his own and we don’t know the full extent to all of his injuries quite yet. On the bright side there is no neck or head injuries. Please keep Logan in your prayers! We are asking for no visitors at this time. Thank you for all of those that have reached out to our family!

Day 8 at home...
Logan has continued to look and feel stronger. This week he had an appointment on Tuesday at the Concussion clinic in St. Paul at Children’s where he learned that he did indeed suffer a concussion on 4/22/18 and requires a follow-up appt June 7th @ 10 a.m. Logan was recommended to not attend school until 5/9/18 then begin 1-2 hours of school daily, gradually increasing to half days then full days over the next several days to weeks. That will put him at the end of his 10th grade year! Logan started school on Thursday with several accommodations which include reduced load of assignments, classroom projects, breaks as needed etc.
If you asked Logan he’d tell you that it was nice being back at school with friends and time away from home. He requires a lot of rest and does a good job following the doctor orders. Lisa went back to school the same 8-11 am time frame on Thursday & Friday and that was good for her too! The students were so happy to see her and it gave her the opportunity to let them know that Logan is back to school and is going to be fine with time needed to heal all the broken bones 👍.
The plan is to go half days next week with the exception of Tuesday due to a follow-up appt with the Orthopedic doctor at Mpls Children’s Specialty center. This appointment will lead us to when and how often he should participate in Physical Therapy here in Buffalo.
Logan’s other appointment was to meet his NEW primary doctor, Frank Anderson at Stellis Health in Buffalo. He reviewed Logan’s entire accident and stay at Children’s hospital. Basically Dr. Anderson suggested Logan follow the recommendations from the upcoming scheduled DR. appts. and reach out to him if problems arise. Dr. Anderson went on to suggest Logan stop the Celebrex and extend the 650 mg from every 6 hours to every 8 hours. That made sense because Logan is not complaining of any terrible pain. The pain team at Children’s did a nice job with tapering his meds. If pain were to increase in the following days, the recommendation is to add Ibuprofen as needed. So far that has not been necessary.
It is noteworthy to share with you that at each of the appointments Logan was at this week, none of them had ever met him and BOTH medical professionals took one look at Logan and commented that he did not look at all like they thought after reading his records and hearing about the ATV accident! That was reassuring to us because we look at Logan on a daily basis and ask ourselves how he can look so strong and sad but true we wonder how he survived let alone already back to school for 3 hours. Again, he is our MIRACLE 😇
What else???
Logan has three follow up appointments the first full week of June and possibly ongoing PT sessions. Concussion clinic, pulmonary and Pediatric Surgical care with Dr. Short at Mpls Children’s Specialty Center.
Visits have been uplifting for Logan and our family 😃! We have appreciated meals from neighbors and friends and the meal train from staff at MLE starting next week. Everyone is taking such good care of us.
We love and appreciate you all ❤️!
Winnie is back to work, Maddie started her internship, and Abbey just finished her Ag Ed degree at UWRF. Hopefully things will slow down a bit. We know Logan feels bored just sitting around at home. We tell him that his number one job is resting, eating and tolerating all of us asking him how he’s doing 😉. So far he’s a pretty good patient!
The attached photo of the birthday cake is from a couple of Lisa’s good friends from school who wanted to help Logan celebrate his birthday since he was unable to do so on 4/25/18. That was the day Logan had his lung surgery. Winnie tries to convince Logan that’s the BEST birthday gift a guy could have-life! Logan isn’t having it...he still wants his license and a car. Lol!
