Liam’s Story

Site created on June 20, 2019

William Aaron Grattage came into our lives June 18th at 1:42 pm at home. Liam’s delivery became complicated fast when both of his shoulders became stuck. Our fantastic midwife Kellie sprung into action and performed an assisted delivery while Dad called 911. But, Liam wasn’t breathing. Attempts to revive him were failing, even when the paramedics arrived just a couple of minutes later so he was transported to Texas Children’s accompanied by his Dad. The ER doctors were just about to give up on our miracle when Will told him- “Don’t give up on us”. He didn’t. A faint pulse was found and he was able to be revived. But, all that time without oxygen was bad news. They immediately started therapeutic hypothermia to try and prevent further damage and see if after 72h he comes out with brain function.  He was transferred to the Main Campus of Texas Children’s and is in the NICU to wait for rewarming.

Journal entry by Katie Grattage

Liam has a big big day tomorrow! It’s warm day! He’s been being such a little champ for mom and dad, keeping his pressures up and loving the attention. Still having seizures so he’s been put on a higher dose of Phenobarbital to help minimise any further damage. Reflexes and neurological exams are continuing to improve!
