Levi’s Story

Welcome to my CaringBridge website. I'm planning to use it to document my experience as a patient of oropharyngeal cancer and to keep family, friends, and colleagues updated. I appreciate your support and words of encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Journal entry by Levi Waldron

Just a quick check-in that I had another set of follow-up appointments, and am still all clear! The visual scope exam with radiation oncology was good - they said my healing from radiation has been so good that it is no longer visible which side was treated. The Physician's Assistant performing the exam introduced me to a resident observing the exam as - "Levi was one of our best patients, he was so compliant, and had no side-effects!" Made me laugh and feel oddly proud about being notably "compliant," although I certainly did have my share of short-term side-effects.  It was hard work to be so compliant during treatment with hydration, nutrition, skin cream, multiple constantly changing 3x/day medications, swallowing exercises, and managing to stay on schedule for all 35 radiation treatments even while hospitalized for infection. She only slightly scolded me now for not taking my vitamin E, having a year between dental checkups (although it was at the advice of my dentist), and being haphazard about my neck and swallowing exercises that I should continue indefinitely as fibrosis is likely to set in eventually. I was definitely more compliant back during treatment, but it feels like such a long time ago now.

I also had a follow-up ultrasound and visit with a soft-tissue sarcoma specialist about the benign nodule that appeared in my shoulder last year. It only confirmed what I already knew, that it hasn't bothered me and that it has shrunk, so there's no need for further follow-up unless it bothers me.

I've continued my new running habit, with my second half-marathon next weekend, and my first full marathon planned for the spring!
