Ledger’s Story

Site created on September 28, 2019

At 38 weeks along we received news that confirmed Ledger has a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH). The best explanation of this condition is that there is a separation in his diaphragm that is allowing his intestines to move up into his chest cavity which affects his heart & lung development. CDH requires immediate medical attention following birth. Due to his diagnosis, we were referred to Children’s Mercy Hospital Fetal Health Clinic where we will deliver him so that he can receive the best care possible.

Ledger has finally worked himself back up to full volume feeds. They are still running at a slower rate on his pump, but the volume is there which is really what matters. He has spent the last few days adjusting from gut-rest to pedialyte at half-volume, then formula at half-volume & now full volume today. It’s been a slow & steady climb but he is doing it!

His incisions look great & he is a happy baby all around. We’re just waiting out another day to see consistency in his feeding tolerance as well as weight gain. Since he went a week without eating his weight has dropped off a bit & we need to work at getting that back up again.

As far as feeds go, when you take a break from the bottle for that long you lack interest & desire to eat from it too— or at least that’s how things work for Ledger. His bottle intake has been extremely poor, but thank goodness for his g-tube! Otherwise we would have to stay in the hospital even longer.

Prayers that he keeps progressing well & gains some weight so we can go home tomorrow 🙏🏻
