Laura’s Story

Site created on November 18, 2021

Hello! Thank you for visiting my Mom's Caring Bridge website. We are using it to keep friends and family updated in one place. On November 11th, 2021, my Mom went into the hospital with some weakness in her left leg and arm. Unfortunately, scans found two brain tumors and she was diagnosed with glioblastoma (brain cancer). She began palliative chemotherapy and radiation on November 29th. On a positive (and predictable) note, she is her usual self: spunky, goofy and VERY talkative (surprise, surprise). We appreciate the many thoughts and prayers and she has enjoyed seeing a number of visitors during her time in the hospital and at home. We know many of you are looking for ways to help which Robert, Olivia and I are extremely thankful for. We will be sure to reach out when we may need some help with meals or simply extra encouragement. In the meantime, we appreciate your prayers and kind words. Thanks again for caring so much about my Mom.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Jimmy Beard

Good afternoon,

I apologize for the delay in providing an update. I didn't want to discourage her with a post.

Today, I went through her phone and noticed that she had not responded to some of you, and if she did, the response did not make much sense. Hence, I thought it was time to update everyone.

The tumors began to grow again in the fall and she started aggressive radiation treatment. Following the radiation treatment, the tumors continued to grow, and her cognitive state began to decline. After radiation stopped, she began chemo treatment again to see if it would work. Unfortunately, the chemo treatment took a toll on her body and we decided to stop the treatment to ensure her quality of life did not continue to decline.

About six weeks ago, we stopped all treatment, and hospice care began at home. She is still eating a lot (she actually gained six pounds last month) and is in no pain. Although she does experience confusion, she still recognizes everyone and is happy and comfortable. Her witty sense of humor still shines through when you talk to her!

Do not be discouraged if you try to reach out to her, and she does not respond. She has been having a hard time with her phone. You can always reach out to me or Robert if you want an update or want us to pass along a note!

Thank you for the continued thoughts and prayers. My Mom has been courageous and brave, and I know all of you have been there to support her.

Love,

Jimmy
