Melissa’s Story

Site created on August 17, 2021

On December 28, 2021 Mel received a bone marrow transplant from her donor brother Stephen. It was successful, and she has shown no signs of AML Leukaemia with an FLT3 mutation and another rare mutation since. She continues to be monitored by her care team @ Stanford Hospital.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Ben Harvey

I suspect that most, if not all of you, stopped paying attention to this site as I have not posted in months. But as we celebrate the holidays - and nearly a year since Mel’s successful BMT - I felt compelled to bang out an update about Mel. Thanks for tuning back in!

Mel continues to improve each week. She is stronger and basically “almost” her former self (with some obvious exceptions). She goes on a daily walk with her beloved doggie Rocky. When it is not too cold, she occasionally surfs (Asilomar State Beach is 9 minutes by bicycle with surfboard rack from our new Pacific Grove house). She is practicing her Spanish again. She is working to make her yard amazing, and is seemingly converting the front of the house to an aviary, judging by all the bird feeders and corresponding activity.

Mel anticipates a busy ski season, and has set a personal goal of “at least” 20 days on the slopes this season. I hope to help her achieve this goal.

Her doctors and care team have authorized Mel to start work again in early 2023. This will be an adjustment, of course, but Mel is anxious to dip back into her professional life, with her love of the environment and animals.

Feel free to drop us a line! Here is our new PG address:

Thank you for sticking with Mel, and for all the love and support on this journey. I have failed many of you, who tried in vain to contact us during these past few months. I’m sorry! I resolve to stay better in touch with all of you.

Have a great holiday season!

Love,
Ben (with Mel reading this over my shoulder and Rocky snoring in the background)
