Larry’s Story

Site created on December 30, 2018

Dad had a  major stroke on December 22nd, 2018. He had a tough month prior to this with ER and doctor visits as well as a hospital stay.  He was diagnosed with Barrettes Esophagus in mid- December while in the hospital.  This is another medical condition completely unrelated to the stroke. After evaluation in the ER on the 22nd, it was determined he needed a thrombectomy.  The surgery was done  by Dr. McDaniel. He felt it went pretty well.  Once medically stable, he will move to  a rehab facility.

Journal entry by Larry Weier

Just wanted to share some news that dad is moving to Mexico to live with my older brother, Scott. We moved him to long term care a little over a month ago from assisted living and it has been a terrible experience for dad especially but for us as well watching the lack of care and his lack of happiness. His quality of life definitely took a hit.

With that and a push from the facility, we made the decision to move him to Scott's.  Scott lives a 1/2 hour from San Diego but in Mexico.  Scott, Cynthia and family are taking dad into their home (actually they are building a casita in their backyard so he can get quiet time when needed) and bringing someone in for dad's cares for about a third the cost of long term care here in the states. He will have individual care from an outside caregiver along with Scott and family. He will get to spend time with his youngest grandkids and will get beautiful weather most of the year. There are a lot of perks once he gets adjusted to the change!

Kathy and I have taken care of him for over 4 years, so will miss him and have an adjustment of our own, but know it is the right move for his quality of life. It also gives us a reason to head south often.

If anyone wants to visit him before we leave next Thursday, Apr 6th, he is at Cedar Ridge Village (about a mile west of Jordan Creek Mall), 8950 Coachlight Dr, West Des Moines IA 50266, room 158 in long term care/skilled nursing.

Thanks from dad and us for all your support the last 4 years!  You are the best!!
