Larry’s Story

Site created on September 4, 2021

Larry was in a horrible accident yesterday afternoon. At work a 800-1000lb monument fell on him. Thanks to the quick actions of his amazing coworker, who is also an emergency responder, and the care he received at Memorial, both his life and his leg were saved. After a 3 hour surgery they were able to save his leg- broken femur, part of it was crushed and it had to be reconstructed with bone putty, along with 4 screws (doc wanted to do 2 but knew how active dad was so chose 4 instead!). They also flushed it out for infection as it was cut open to the bone.

Doc's biggest concern is Larry trying to put any weight on it for 3 months. He will require a 24 hour caregiver for 3 months. If he puts any weight on it before 3 months it will completely collapse and no surgeon will be able to replace the whole knee because there are missing parts. He will be in the hospital for 48 hours with strong antibiotics to help prevent infection. After that he is in Gods hands with regards to infection and healing. Medically they have done all they can. This is a life altering accident for Larry. He will no longer be able to do his job of 33 years.

We are grateful and appreciate everyone reaching out to my mom, brother, & I. Because of the incredible response of everyone we are unable to get back to everyone individually. We will continually update this page for everyone to know. Keep them prayers coming as we know they are truly helping!!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Alli Crocker

It's time we give everyone an update as we have had a significant amount of you who care so much about us, reach out to us. The past couple months have been incredibly trying on both dad AND mom. They both had Covid before Thanksgiving, mom getting it first with a pretty severe case- but we all know mom & she fought. Dad got it as well, but his was not as bad. They both fought the exhaustion and rested as much as they could.  Mom ended up with Covid "brain fog"- this resulted in a lot of confusion for her. She then had an accident where she hit her head very hard, was taken to the ER & diagnosed with a severe concussion. Mom was released to come home to visit her kids & grandkids for a couple of days. While at home she played the Glamma mode & was unable to heal from the concussion. This was a setback to her brain healing which caused some more intense symptoms related to the concussion. Doctors had mom go on bed rest to let her brain heal from the concussion (and the Covid brain fog).

When it comes to dad and his recovery, he had his 3 month follow up with the surgeon. There he was told he could finally put weight on his leg & learn to walk again! At that appointment surgeon said that it could take another 3 months before he is back to his "new normal" whatever that may be! He is learning to walk while his leg is overcompensating for the permanent nerve & muscle damage. He will continue physical therapy a couple times a week to strengthen the muscles in his leg & find his "new normal" of his leg!

Mom & dad could both use continued prayers as they navigate caring for one another! As always we are blessed with all the love & support received!
