Journal entry by Taylor Ullom

…And just like that Kyle and his terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day came to a story book ending.

This evening, just before some severe thunderstorms hit the DC area, Kyle and Courtney's flight landed safely at Reagan National Airport. Shortly after Kyle walked down the baggage claim and hugged his friends. He then walked out to a gathering of teammates, bosses, and friends that have been awaiting his return home. He then loaded up in a van and had a ceremonial escort home by the Fairfax County Police Motors Squad. Who, even in the horrific weather, made it their mission to see Kyle home safely.

After all, that is what this story has been. It’s one of service to others, overcoming adversity and seeing the mission through to the end. This story is as human as it is heavenly. It’s a story of a jogger named Karen, who stopped when she didn’t have to. A couple of nurses named Ashely and Elizabeth, who gave of themselves to save a life. And a congressman whose acts of service extend to more than just his constituents.

It’s about the bond of friends and coworkers. The support from family, and strangers alike. And ultimately its about the life that was saved. Kyles’ life. Tonight, we are thankful. Thankful to have Kyle. Thankful to laugh with our friend and see him laugh with us. But we are also thankful for you, who read along with Kyles story.

So tonight, as we write for the last time, we hope you use Kyles’ story as a call to action.  We hope that you live a life of service to others, and we hope that you cherish all those close to you... We know we will.
