Kris’s Story

Site created on February 3, 2020

At Thanksgiving, 2019, I found out that I have a 6” tumor in my abdomen, which after a biopsy and testing, has been diagnosed as Adrenocortical Carcinoma, cancer of the Adrenal Gland. At the same time the CT scan also showed spots in my lungs and lymph nodes.

The adrenal glands are small glands located on top of each kidney. They produce hormones that you can't live without, including sex hormones and cortisol. Cortisol helps you respond to stress, blood pressure and has many other important functions. With adrenal gland disorders, your glands make too much or not enough hormones.

Never would I have expected this as I did not feel sick. The only symptom I had was an on again off again slight tummy ache. And I was curious about this new black patch of hair on my arm and some voice change (the hormones!). Up until March I continued to feel well, going about my normal activities, that quickly changed after chemo.

The hardest part of this journey is the waiting and wrapping our heads around the rarity of this particular cancer. 1 in 1 million annually in the US. Many doctor appointments, blood tests, CT and Muga scans and Iron infusions, we are now getting closer to a chemo start date. I have chosen Providence Cancer Care in Everett for my treatment location and doctors care, as well as help and 2nd opinions from SCCA.

Nick and I are beyond blessed and grateful for the faith, love and support from so many fiercely loyal family and friends. Thank you, we love you. 💕
